It happened in the Napier district. The sergeant had just arrived, and his firet night was pouring wet. There was a knock at the station door, and ai Maori of some twenty stone weight was admit*#d. "Who do you want?" "You come my place. A man there he annoy my wife: won't go away. You come put him out." "Why don't you chuck him out yourself? You're big enougjh. "Me no likee; law say me assault him. «<Oh, well, I suppose I will have to go, said the sergeant. "How far your , place?" "Oh, just up the road.' After traveling about a mile, stumbling into sundry ditches, getting soaked through, ' and rather warm in temper, the seri geant arrived, and found an vndor'sized individual sitting over the fire and ! the Maori women (certainly looking I distressed) sitting back in a corner. No time was lost, no questions asked-—the unwelcome guest was taken by the scruff of the neck and unceremoniously fired lout into the road.
