SUMNER ITEMS.

Horticultural Society. A meeting of the Sumner-Redcliffb Horticultural Society was held last night, when the vice-president, Mr T. E. Whitfield, presided over a good attendance. A vote of thanke was passed to Mr H. O. D. Meares for presenting a trophy for the competitor gaining most points in local classes. The following judges were appointed for the coming show: —Flowers: Messrs Nairn and Jones. Decorative: Mr W. Enassmussen. Cooking: Mrs Morton. Vegetables and fruit: Mr W. Knox. Botany : Miss Falconer and Mrs Corson. Photography: Mr Wheeler. Drawing, painting, and modelling: Mr W. Bartley. Writing: Mr C. C. Corffe. Meccano and woodwork: Mr A. A. Cheshire. Needlework: Mrs ThornJey. Seven new members were elected, bringing the membership roll number up to 86. All Saints' Church. Tuesday last was the 45th anniversary of the consecration of All Sainte Church. Special festal services were conducted hist Sunday, when there were large congregations at all the services. Special hymns were sung, the vicar preaching in the morning, while the Ven. Archdeacon P. B. Haggitt preached in the evening. On Tuesday a very enjoyable social was held in the parish room, when there was a good attendance. Competitions were Held, while musical and other items were given by Misses M. Barber, N. Wilson, Gobble, E. Thomas, J. Coleman, K. Thomas, and Mr Hobbs. Votes of thanks 'were passed to the choir and choirmaster for the excellent music given at the festal services. Waterworks Extension. The machinery for the waterworks extension throughout the borough has arrived, and is now being _ placed in position in the new pumping house. A pulsometer 2-stage hijgh left turbino pump has arrived. Thae is driven by a 33 horse-power motor, and has a lifting capacity of 18,000 gallons :m hour. When fitted up, the new wells will give about 100 gallons of water

per minute. At present about 60 gallons a minute is being procured as a temporary supply, and is being run into the old reservoir, and this will be maintained until the new machinery is in running order. Oampbell/ Duncan, and Truro streets are now being reticulated with service pipes and fire mains, and this completes the whole of the Sumner section of the reticulation.. Taylor's Mistake Boad. Excellent progress is being made with the new road to Taylor's Mistake, and the road is now formed to the second to last gully over the bay. Three large water culverta have been put down. It is anticipated that another five or six weeks' work will complete the road right through. Delay has been caused during the past week owing to two of the Council's horses having been malicioiißly turned adrift. So far the horses have not been recovered. Llfe-Saving Club. At the regular meeting of the Sumner Life-Saving and Surf-Bathing Club, Mr F. J. Gkekin. presided. Donations were received from the following: Mr G. Humphreys £1 Is, Mr Bu A. Bruce £1 Is, Mr E. "W. Pidgeon £1 Is, Dr. O. A. Femberton £1 Is, Mr P. Truscott £5, Mr W. G. Black £2 2s. Mr S. K. Bassett was appointed a member of the Surf Association. It was decided to fix the opening day for December 16th, and to ask the Surf Association to hold a competition in connexion therewith, A report on the reels showed that four reels were being prepared for the season. Three were already in good order. It was decided to approach the Council with a view to effecting some alight alterations to the notice- boards, and to urge the public to bathe in front of the pavilion. Arrangemeixts were made to have a rotac* members on duty posted in the pavilion. It was resolved that the qualification for active membership, with reduction of fee, should, for this vear, be satisfied by private indoor instruction in resuscitation, and in line and reel work, this to be taken as early as possible, and the instruction to be given when possible, to suit the members. Sunday morning instruction was fixed for between 8 and 9.
