UNEMPLOYMENT.
NORTH CANTERBURY COMMITTEE. | The North Canterbury Unemployment Committee met yesterday. Present: Messrs W. Gobs (chairman), W. JJonkin, W. E Leadley, H. H- Holland, W. H. Winsor, C. Benjamin, P. R. Climic, T. C. Fielder, and the Rev. F. X. Taylor. Tiie City Council -wrote stating that a deputation from the committee would bo received at the next meeting. The Canterbury Jockey Club informed the committee that it was not in favuur of having collections taken up ot its Meetings. The chairman stated that the Jletropolitan Trotting Club hud granted permission for six men to attend the Meetings and collect for the committee. It was decided to appoint collectors. The chairman reported that the Church of England Men's Society's Band had been given permission to hold a. concert next Sunday afternoon in aid of the fund- The chairman's action was approved. A letter was received from the director of the .Musical Society stating thci willingness of the Society to 'hold concerts m aid of the- fund It wa6 decided to thank Mr 11. B. Owen for his offer. Mr Jenkins said he thought the committee wero taking a wrong step. They wero looking forward to a permanent unemployment question, and that was not right. Messrs Leadley, "Winsor, and the chairman were appointed a. sub-commit-tee to co-operate with the Musical Society. Mr Winsor reported that Mr JYoung, curator of the Botanic Gardens, had informed him that he was very satisfied with tho work of the men ougaged in the Gardens- The men who caught the public eye were disabled returned soldiers, who could not work very hard. The secretary, Mr F. S. Marshall, reported that he had 54 unemployed men on the books of the Repatriation Department, 27 being labourers. Mr Fielder reported that there were 130 unemployed men on the books.of the Labour Department, which number was 28 less thau the previous week; 6o wore married and To were single men. Mr Leadley said the total amount obtained by subscriptions was £120i5 't)s Bsd, Uho amount paid out in wages w«b £578 18s. leaving a balance of £773 Us B»Jd. Sixty men Mero being employed in the Gardens, and lost week's wagea bill was £l9B 4s. These men could bo employed for another four weeks on the money in hand. It was decided to ask the Dttnedin, "Wellington, and Auckland Unemployment Committees to combine with Christchurch in asking for a Government subsidy on all moneys subscribed to the committees.
