SUMNER WAR MEMORIAL.
—— ♦ ■■■■— PUBLIC! MEETING. A public meeting was held in the Sumner School Inst night to endeavour to giro effect to the resolution recently, carried: "That the war memorial take the form of a salt-water swimming bath." The Rev. William McAra was voted to t'ho chair. In response to a question raised by, Mv H. Buttle, Mr €l-. A. Alexander said the meeting was a publio meeting, and was not called tinder the auspices ot tho School Committee. Mr F. H. 11. Neville explained tha position aa left by the last public meeting. He said public opinion generally seemed to favour the swimming bath. The efforts of tho last two years bad been unsuccessful, and were altogether unseemly, considering tfeo object they had in view. They could not oxpcct to_ raise money for the memorial in a week, but if Sumner took up the matter, it) could carry it through. He then outlined the proposals for raising the funds, and suggested that there should be an executive council, a committee of fifteen, and fifty section leaders. Mr W. F. Raphael supported the scheme, and said ho would endeavour to get assistance for the committee. The proposals were also supported by Messrs H. Buttle, Craig, and H. G. Bailey. * The following committee was appointed: Messrs F. H. R. Neville, W. Fenton, H. Buttle, Bailey, G. F. Allen, J. Browne, C. Lawson, Craig, Crosbie, Glackin, Alexander, W. F. Raphael, and H. C. Jones, with, power to add to their number. On the motion^of Mr H. Buttle, itj was decided to ask Air G. W. C. Smithson to act as permanent chairman.
