METROPOLITAN SHOW.

NEXT WEEK'S FIXTURE. INCREASE IN TOTAL ENTBIES. The complete figures relating to the entries for the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Metropolitan Show, to bo held next Thursday and Friday on the Association's Show Grounds at Addington, we"e made available yesterday. The grand total shows a most gratifying increase as compared with the grand totals for the years following the outbreak of the great war, and is gradually creeping up to the prewar totals. This year's entries total 1972, as compared with 1847 in 1920, 1884 in 1919, 1476 in 1918, 1424 in 1917. 1825 in 1916, 1939 in i 916, i in 1914, 2322 in 1913, 2U27 in 1912, 2017 in 1911, tnd 2154 in 1910. Taking into consideration the present condition of affairs in the agricultural and pastoral industries the number of entries this year must be considered very satisfactory. A pleasing feature is that there are increases in all sections, the only exception being in the light horse classes. Under conditions existing at present, light horses are probably more of a luxury than they have been in past years; it is also'highly probable that the ever-increasing inroads of the motor-car are having the effect of diverting attention from the breeding of light horses. The entries in the various classes this year as compared with those for 1920 and 1919 are as follows: 1921. 1920. 1919. Judging Competitions.. 21 18 42 Bog Trials .. .. 7 0 0 Sheep .. .. 917 823 734 Cattle .. .. 352 830 343 Horses .. .. 450 500 427 Pigß 61 58 61 Dairy Prodrace, etc. .. 161 118 150 Dogs .. ..I .. 0 0 14 Soldiers' Work 0 0 109 Timber Exhibits .. 0 9 4 Totals .. .- 19T2 1847 1884 These figures do not include the entries for carriages, imnlements, machinery, and special exhibits in tents. A notable increase this year is in the entries for the dairy produce class; the principal sections in which the increased nave taken place are in those providing for competition in home-made bread, scones, and cakes. _ The general public usually show great interest in the competitions; and there is a slight increase in these sections this year. A new feature are the pony trots; for the two sections the total entries received number 17. For these sections Mr J. O. Coop and Mr H. 8. S. Kyle have provided special prizes to be awarded to the best riders in each section. The sheep trials are another new feature this year, and for these seven entries have been received. As is customary, the judging competitions and the jumping events will be decided on the first "day; the pony-trots are also to be competed for on that day. On People's Dav the hunters' competitions, the consolation jumping competition, and the competitions for boy and girl riders will tafie place. The general arrangements for the show are in a forward condition, and given fine weather the fixture should be as great a success this year as it has been for many years post. Their Excellencies the Governor-General and the Viscountess Jellicoe will attend the show'on People's Day. They are to arrive at 11.30 a.m. and will be received by the president. Mr D. W. Westenra, the secretary, Mr G. G. Denniston, and officers of the Association. Their Excellencies will luncß with the committee.
