HARBOUR BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The Lyttelton Harbour Board met yesterday. Present—Messrs J. Storry (chairman), W. J. Walter, H. T. Armstrong, S. K. Sleigh, R. Macartney, .F. Ilorrell, T. A. Blackley, H. B. Sorensen, - and J. K. Me- j Alpine. j A report on the.proceedings of the eighth conference of the Harbours' Association oi New Zealand was .submitted by the chairman, who, with Messrs Horrell, H. Holland, and C. J. R. "Williams, represented the Lyttelton Board at the conference. Tha report was received. ■ The engineer reported that between September 30th and October 6th the dredge Canterbury had removed 13,691 tons of spoil from the outer channel, which had been pumped into the reclamation area. Commencing on October 10th. the dredge, up to October 27th, had removed 67,340 tons of spoil at Oama-ru, principally from the inner harbour. The tug Lyttelton had overgone her annual survey and overhaul, and wae in good ordoi throughout. The report wag adopted. The secretary reported that no shipping delays worth reporting' had bean experience! during October. i , The treasurer's statement fihowecl* that since the previous meeting, the receipt* had amounted to £7982 15s Bd, as compared with ££B44 14s 8d for i tho corresponding period of ' last year. The harbour fund was in debit £6999 7s 10d, and the payment.of accounts would increase the debit to £9628 18s 3d. , Tho ifoort was adopted. '"• ;The Sailors' Home Committee reported the earnings for October to Mve. been £is2 6s, .'and' the expenditure £lO6 la 7d. The average number ,of boarders in the Some during October liad been 27, ai against 21 for October of last year. The report was adopted. Tiie Board discussed in committeepetition from tho Blackball Coal Company and Forbes, Ltd.; of'Lyttelton, asking the Board to .remit a portion of its charges against the Broxton, which charges had been accepted a* a preferential claim to be para m full wlule the claims of the petitioners, for actual outlay on goods supplied, were- only payable on,- a reduced basis, as the proceeds From ,the sale of the ship were not sufficient to meet the claim;. It was decided that the berthage charges from the time the vessel ceased to discharge cargo until the time when she was again 111 commission be reduced by 50 per cent., subject to the approval of the Board's solicitor, rid to incorporate the decision in the jJoard's by-laws ' for future action.
