AMBERLEY, On Tuesday evening a general meeting of the Amberley Cricket Club was held in the library, when Mr W. Boyco presided The chairman stated that as enthusiasm and individual support by some members was lacking., ha deemed it advisable to call a general meeting of members to consider the question of withdrawing either the senior or junior team from the North Canterbury Assocompetitions. After considerable discussion it was decided to adjourn the meeting for a fortnight, and in the meantime ascertain what support can lie relied upon from the playing members. Owing to the transference of the captain, Mr F. L. Adams to a distant district, Mr M. Free was unanimously elected captain in his stead. SCABGILL. The fortnightly euchre, party and dance were held on Friday. In spite of inclement weather there was a good attendance. These social gatherings are proving most popular. The prizes were iron by Miss Dtinlop and Mr J. Ryan, tho consolation prizes going to Mrs J. Ryan and Mr O. Burrows. ASHLEY BANK. Tuesday evening witnessed one of the largest and most representative gatherings that have been held in the Ashley School-room for a considerable time, the occasion being a valedictory social to Mr and Mrs J. Criglington and family, who arc leaving the local store and post office to take up their residence at Leithfield. D'tiring the evening Mr C. H. Downing, on behalf of the residents of 1 the district, took the opportunity of presenting Mr and Mrs Criglington with a handsome oak and tapetetry settee and a silver-plated kettle, and also spoke in eulogistic terms of the voluntary work done in the district by both, especially during the war period. Mr Criglington having briefly responded, the guests of honour were the recipients of hearty cheers and "For Thev Are Jolly Good Fellows" was sung. Dancing was then indulged in until a late hour. RANG-lORA. Mr W. E. Cockroft, who is leaving Rangiora to take up a position inj Christchurch, was tendered a farewell social by members of the local cricket and football clubs. Mr T. Shanklands, president of the cricket club, presided, and on behalf of the clu.be presented Mr ■Cockroft \yith a pair of silver entree disih.es. -During, the evening, musical items were given by Messrs t>. W. L. Melutens, C. F. Meyers, C. Lawrence, J. C. Thompson, and C. Keir. Mr A. G. Hunnibell presided at the piano. MARSHLAND. The Excelsior Variety Entertainers gave an entertainment in the Hall on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance and the lengthy programme submitted was much appreciated! TAX TAPU. ( An entertainment was given in, Tai Tapir Hall to a large and appreciative auuience by the "juvenile Merrymakers" m aid of St. Paul's Church. The programme was varied by songs, dances, and recitations, assisted by a good .orchestra. The vicar, the Rev. P. Oarrington, gave an outline of what the concert was in aid of and thanked the company for the enjoyable evening. The ladies of the church provided supper for the performers. Members:of the Tai Tapu school committee held a meeting in the schoolroom recently. The chairman, Mr T. 0. Morgan reported that the Tai Tapu school had come, sixth in the Canterbury Education district for a potato-growing competition. It was decided to hold the annual school picnic at Waipara Park, Motukarara. on November 17th. •-ThejTai Tapu. Flower Show will be -held in aid of the school and library building funds; '« I - • AKAKOA. A meeting of the executive of the Akaroa Regatta Club was held on Tuesday evening, Mi 1 Qeo. Armstrong presiding. A notice of motion by Mr P. G. Riches, "That" the prize money for the sailing rate in last year's regattfc "be paid over;" was earned. The programme of this year's regatta was drawn up ; consisting of 12 rowing events, with prize money of £96. One sailing race was included, the prize money to be £ls, provided that one outside boat competed, and £2O if two or more silch boats competed. Mr Mark Wright was appointed starter and timekeeper for the sailing race, and Mr Win. Pool, handicapper. It was unanimously decided to adopt the recommendation from last year that a trophy, preferably 'a shield, be awarded to the club gaining most points in the rowing events. Messrs C. Goodwin, P. Riches, T. McKenzie and the secretary were deputed to act with Mr Faithful in running entertainments in aid-of the regatta funds. ASHBUKTON. Tho stock slaughtered at the Ashburton abattoir during the month of October was Cattle 105 (two condemned); calves 2; sheep and lambs 1128 (two condemned); pigs 26. At a miniature rifle match between the Ashburton and Wakanui Clubs, Ashburtrm won by 288 points to 267.
