UNEMPLOYMENT.
CITY COUNCIL WORK. A return "was presented to the City Council last night showing the amounts spent on providing work for the unemployed. The .return showed the following expenditure: —Central ward (Canterbury Hall) finished, £294 5s 7d, (general) finished, £l2 16s 9d; Spreydon ward (Frankley street), £lB5 12s 4d; (gravel pit), finished, £22 17s; St. Albans ward (Elmwood avenue), £BO lis 3d; pumping station, Cashmere, finished) £BO 15s 6d. The only relief works now in operas tion are Frankley street extension and the formation of Allister avenue. Cr. W. H. Winsor said the Councl was paying the ordinary rates to the men employed. Twenty of the unemployed were put on to the work at the Botanic Gardens yesterday, some being sent from the Repatriation Department and others from the Department of Labour. Twelve men—six from the Department of Labour's list and a similar number from the Repatriation Department's list—left yesterday morning for the work on the Leader river (Parnas-sus-Waiau road) deviation; another twelve men, who have been selected, leave latter in ■ the week for the same work.
