Mr F. S. Jarman, the newly-appoint-ed secretary of the Springe-Ellesmere Electric Power Board, takes up duties at Leeston on Monday. According to a London message Sir Joseph and Lady Ward are to leave Southampton to-day for New. York, going thence to New Zealand/via San. Francisco. They may return to London early next summer. Mr H. J. D. Mahon is unable to accept the headmaster-ship of the new Auckland Grammar Scnool on the grounds of ill-health. The position has been offered to the next acceptable candidate, whose name is withheld. The Rev. John Bissett, the Assembly evangelist of the New Zealand Presbyterian Church, commences a united mis-, sion in St. Paul's Church to-morrow. He is a powerful preacher, and has had a very successful career as an evangelist in Scotland and in this Dominion. He is accompanied by his daughter, who is a gifted contralto singer. At the conclusion of last night's meeting of the . Heathcote County Council, the council table was quickly converted by the ladies into a supper table, and those present honoured the departure of Mr G. S. Cowper, clerk, who is taking up a position on the Waimairi Council. There were present, besides the members of the Council, Mrs Cowper, Misses Wass (2) and Suckling, and Messrs R. Maynell, J. Booker, T. Roberts, W. Carter, and F. Tucker. | The table was gaily decorated with flowers and coloured paper 31 rW. W. <scarff, chairman, proposed the toast of Mr Cowper, who was accorded musical honours. Mr Flavell eulogised the services that Mr Cowper had rendered to the Council, and on behalf of the Council and staff presented him with an oak Morris chair. -Mr Cowper said he had tendered his resignation with regret. He did not know that his services were valued to the extent of such a present. He could only thank the Council and office staff for the way he had been treated. Mr A. F. Smith then proposed "The Staff," which was responded to by Miss M. Wase.
