(press a:sociation telegram.) WANGANUI, October 14. At the Baptist Conference to-day, the ■election of officers resulted President, Rev. V. H. Hinton: vice-president, Mr J. A. Pannett (Ohrietchurch); Conference sermon preacher, Rev. A. S. Wilson; deputy, Rev. Mr Hercus; editor of '■Baptist,'' Rev. J. J. North; auditor, Mr Charles Collins; solicitor, Mr U. JVlazengarb. „ , T 7 On the motion of the Rev. J- d • North, the following resolution was carried"This Conference calls attention to the ominous spread of gambiingj and Affirms that tii© licensing by the Government of the _totalisator is responsible for the alarming growth of gambling in all classes of society; the Conference believes the time has arrived for a nation-wide movement against gambling; that clear teaching .ought everywhere to be given on the social, economic, and moral perils of the gambling habit; that the circumstances of the day demand that the Government license for petty gambling in aid of philanthropic or religious purposes should be at once withdrawn.
