THE GAOL SITE. The recent interview that the Mayor «£ the town clerk (Mr P. The, Mayor *»«£ that the town clerk and himself had o» cussed with the Ministers the oi the Council taking over the whole of W» gaol eite in exchange for pulling down .the walk. While the Minister of Education was favourable to handing over his port on of the site, the- Minister of Justice requir ed that the Council should put its pr°P? E *" into writing, and at the eamo time submit plans to the Department of Justice. Speaking on the subject at iW« ft the Mayor eaid that he understood that ic had been the object of the Justice Department to offer for sale by tender the nooses on the gaol property. He had been given to understand, however, that even iftne property was advertised the Council shonld not be afraid. Ho thought that the Conncil should make some offer. He wouia lite councillors to look over tho property before an offer waß made. , . Cr. J. J. Gower eaid' he thought that the Council should set up a special committee to look, into the matter. , , Tho town clerk (Mr F. Webb, to hold a special meeting on October 26th to consider the matter, the engmeer, Mr H. H. Bumard, meanwlnle to report fully upon the cost of making the necessary alterations and pulling down the walls of the gaol building and making two levels so aa to provide for » playground in connesion with the school, and also a recrea tion ground.

BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Lyttelton Borough Council met lart night. Present—The Mayor > JMi w. 1. Lester), and Crs. G. Grubh, H. WehT>, G. Whitford, J. J. Gower, J. H. Collins, <J. Webb, W. J. Elliott, and M. J. Md"*-,. The Mayor made feeling reference to tne recent fata] Are. It was satisfactory ho saw, to know that the water supply had been adequate: it could not have been improved on. The Fire Brigade had done splendid work, but unfortunately they were unable to prevent loss of life. He trueted, however, tliat the citizens would see that, as far as was humanly possible, Mr and Mrs Dodds would be compensated for their losses. The ■ secretary of the Lyttelton Cricket Club wrote asking for finanoial assistance in the matter of . preparing; a ground, at Diamond HarbouT. Permission was also requested to. play raatohes on the ground at Officers' Point. _ .„+,■, It was decided, on the motion of Cr. .001lina, that the Council grant the servicee of a man to prepare a pitch at Diamond Harbour, on condition that the club ehouldmake application to the Council when it required to play special matches. Permission was granted to play on the ground at Officers Point. , A resident of St. David street wrote, stating that while playing his eon had been hit on the head with the door of a waggon, which had been left in Bipon street by one of the Council's.employees. The door had fallen on the boy's head, necessitating the insertion of five stitches.- The writer sugfested that the Council should pay £26 to efray medical »nd other expenses incurred as a result, of the accident. It was decided to reply that, while the Council regretted the injury to the hoy,- it could not recognise j»ny responsibility in the matter.

The General Purposes Committee reported that Mr W. W. Suddens had .applied for "^rmusiOT^to-«rect'~* walllh front of.- His prgpertyv in Hawkhurst road, and had expressed nimself as willing to contribute towards the cost. The committee recommended that Mr Suddens be informed. that, M the erection of the wall was:for his own benefit, the Council was prepared to provide the stone at the quarry free. In refer-ence.-to Mr Grazier's complaint of tidewater overflowing his land, the committee had instructed the town cleric to writ* to the Heathcote County Council, asking them to call a conference of the property-owners interested, to see if some joint action oould be taken; in the matter, arid asking the Jatter body to have the main drains cleaned out. . It was recommended that the residents of Lyttelton he asked to take steps to destroy rats by means of laying poison and by trapping. ■ The report was adopted. ■ The tender of Holliss and Brown, to renovate and alter the Council Chamber for £l9O was accepted... Four tenders were received. The tender of Mr J. H. Collins, of £95, for section 121, consisting of 85 perches, at Diamond Harbour,. was accepted.
