NEW ZEALAND SCHOOL CHILDREN'S ANNUAL GIFT DINNER
TO THE POCK CHILDREN OF THE MOTHERLAND. TO THE EDITOR OF."THE TRESS.'' Three thousand of the poorest children from 50 fowiis in England will long remember the Christmas of 1920! They then enjoyed such a. Christmas feast of roast beef and plum pudding, aa they may hate beard about, but never expected to. partake of. These dinners are provided and sent through the Church Army mainly by the State and Sunday school children of New Zealand —mostly by small donations, but assisted by other sympathisers. '. The Church Army lias 120 labour homes, as well, as smaller places, where the uoor are always welcome. New Zealand has sent donations to these homes sine© 1910, and the Christmas dinners are looked for annually. Invitations could • only be given to DO of thesd. homes this year, but as more, and more schools are contributing to this dinner fund each year, we confidently expect, that the increase of gifts for Christmas.. 1921. will enable, many more towns to partake of the hospitality pf Young New Zealand. We could only spare sufficient money to enable 55 invitations to be sent out in Newark. Our guests were selected from among the poorest homes. The Mayor of Newark explained the nature 'of this New Zealand gift, and cheer after cheer was given for their kind friends overseas.
A curious experience was recently reported in a gardening journal. The writer of the letter, or paragraph, was troubled with wireworms iu his vegetable garden, and in the hopeß of trapping them he employed tne common method of burying pieces of potato and carrot. Close by were some old chrysanthemums which had been planted out. When he came to examine his various baits he did not find a single wirefvorm, but happening to disturb one of the chrysanthemums which had been planted close by he was surprised to «ee that it was infested Vith them, and on further inspection so were the other chrysanthemums. In.future he intends to use these plants instead of pieces of potato and carrot for trapping wireworins.
