SPORTING.

Nominations for iho North Canterbury and Oxford Jockey Club's Annual Meeting, to be held at R-angiora on Labour Day, Monday, October 24th, close at 8 o'clock this evening. The programme shows a total of 1000 sovs in stakes, the Rangiora Cup being worth 200 sovs.

The two-year-olds \V;iet«a and Stream, owned by Mr W. H. Ballinger, of "Wellington, arrived frofin the North by yesterday's steamer, and will go on to Dunedin by train to*day, They aro engaged at the l>unedin Jockey Club's Spring Meeting next week.

As result of his win at Kurow yesterday, following his success at Ashburfon, Jock has earned a penalty of slb for the New Zealand Cup. The two races he won brought him 416 sovs in 9takes, and his weight is now 6st 121b.

The Australian Jockey Club's Spring Meeting will be brought to a conclusion to-day at Itandwick, the most important eveht being the Randwick Plate, weight-for-age, two miles.

Tho Victoria Amateur Turf Club's Spring Meeting will be commenced today at Cijuliield. Tho program mo :n----cludes three very interesting events—the Debutant Stakes, for two-year-* olds, four furlongs; Caulfield Stakes, weight-for-age, nine furlongs; and Caulfield Guineas, for thre&-year-olds, one mile. Big Chief and Athens 11. were scratched for tho Now Zealand Cup at 7.25 p.m. yesterday. A Melbourne message says C. B. Kellow has purchased a half-interest in Lionel Atwell. Although the numbers show a slight falling off as compared with last year's figures, tho Canterbury Jockey Club has received a very satisfactory list of entries for the principal events ?t the New Zealand Cup Meeting: The figures for each race, are as follows, the numbors of last year's entries being shown in parentheses: 'Stewards' Handicap, 47 (63); Metropolitan Handicap, 37 (37); Canterbury Cup, 23 (22); Jockey Club Handicap 57 (61) ; Members' Handicap, 55 (00): Stead Gold Cup, 31 (33); Juvenile Plate, 34 (49). The Acorn Stakes, the newlyestablished race for two-year-old fillies, has drawn an entry of 22. Tho Stewards' Handicap, one of tho most valuable sprint-events of the year, lias attracted some brilliant performers, including Amythas, Rational, Merniin, Solfanello, Winning Hit. Silver Link, Miss Mimic, and Mustard Pot, Clean Sweep and The Hawk, who figure us the list, also claim engagement in the New Zealand Cun. It is interesting to note that the A.J.C. Derby winner Cupidou has been nominated for the Canterbury Cup, Jockey Club Handicap, and Stoad Memorial Cold Cup. and Gloaming also appears in the lastmentioned race.

His Excellency the Governor-General has extended Oil's patronago to the Benefit Trotting Meeting to be held at Aldington next week, in aid of, Nurse Maude's WorJc and the Blind Soldiers Fund, but regrets that engagements will prevent his personal attendance. The Governor-General's private secretary in writing to the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association to the above effect, conveys his Excellency's good wishes for the financial success of the Meeting in aid of so deserving a cause.

The Canterbury Owners' "ind Breeders' Association sent through the Speaker an invitation to the members of the House of Representatives to bo present at the Benefit Trotting Meeting at Aldington next Saturday. The secretary of the Association Has received the following repiy i "I have to thank vour Association myself, and' on behalf of the other members, for their kind invitation, but regret that my Parliamentary duties will make it impossible for me to be present. I shall have pleasure, in placing the invitation on the notice board, and feel sure that members will much appreciate the same. Hoping you' will haVG successful meeting.—Yours faithfully, IT. W. Lang, Speaker." It is understood the Aucklander who was anxious to secure Mermin was prepared to go to 2500 guineas, for the son of Absurd, but the lowest Mr Stead was prepared to consider was 3000 guineas. ' ' ' ( The Sir Laddo gelding Caddie Blue, who won tho valuable Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick, last. Monday, was bought as a yearling by his present owner, Mr H. I?. Miinro, for 105 guineas. Laddie Elite's dam, Bky Blue, is ft daughter of the H'otcnklsa horse True Blue, who was hred at "Wellington Park Auckland.

In Australia, a. jockey was suspended for six months for changing, his position at the post. In this instance the rider drew No. 16, but took No. 1 position. In defence, lie claimed -that he understood he drew No. 1, and immediately went to it, but the stewards came to the _ conclusion that he took his wrong position, and that owing: to tho attention of the starter being engaged l>y refractory horses he did •not notice the incident. An appeal was lodged agaihst the sentence. CAXTERBVkY J.C.'S METROPOLITAN MEETING.
