U.S. FILM IMPORT TAX.

NEW YORK, August 5. | The , keen opposition among United States kinema producers to the proposed import tax on foreign films continues to grow. The Fox Film Com* pany have joined the Goldwyn Company in denouncing it, and inform me (says a correspondent of a London daily) that they have instructed their solicitors to appear before the Senate Finance Committee, when the Tariif Bill cornea up, to enter a vigorous protest. . ' ■ Mr. William Fox takes the same view as that expressed by other producers. Foreign films are welcomed as giving a fillip and ideas to native producers. Further, their value- spreads authentio i knowledge, of the manners and customs of other countries. . Mr Fox also holds that kinema films should not be considered: as a commercial commodity,, and contends that the proposed tax would be a tax on art. A well-known writer on film topics yesterday said that the tax is a matter of concern to the whole United States public, as it would perpetuate the present high admission: charges through the maintenance of high prices for the raw film. My Los Angeles correspondent confirms this by stating, that the tax 13 denounced among producers, as it. would be a' virtual subsidy for a certain film manufacturing company, which would, enjoy a monopoly if foreign films were, exefuded. Retaliation by European countries is also feared. ;
