SPORTING.

As a result of his win at Wangacui on Thursday, Eouen haa incurred a 61b penaltv for tho N«w Zealand Cup bringing bis weight up to Bst. 1116.' Mr TV G Nightingale, secretary of tbo Waipukurau Joekey Club, lias been under the doctors' orders lately. Recently ho was unable to attend a meeting of hb committee, for the first time sine© ho was appointed to the position Borne twenty years ago. His numerous friends in tho sporting world will be glad to hear of his return to his usual health and strength. Mr W. Fnller, of Wellington, haE purchased the aged gelding Goldalnne, and intends racing him over hurdle?. In future the San Fran gelding will be trained by J Pool at Greenmeftdows. \t the annual meeting of the Wellington Trotting Club, on Wednesday, the following motion waa passed : '•That tho club expresses its appreciation of the consideration given by the •Racing Commission to the representations of the club, and accords its sincero thanks to the Commission for the recognition of the claims of Wellington as evidenced by the recommendation for increased permits." Of tho top-weight in tho Melbourne Cup, a writer in tho Sydney ''Referee' fcavs: "iTurythmic ia a great horse, but etui, any backer taking tho comparatively short price on offer against him in tho Melbourne Cup at this stage, displays moro pluck than judgment. No doubt Eurythmic is doing well enough to make his trainer very hopeful but the race is two and a hair months off, and a lot can happen m that time. -It must be admitted tha* it will bo necessary for Eurythmic to bo quit© at his best to win with 10st slb and for that reason, it would be ■wieer for his backors to wait. I would not mind making a small wager that his starting price will not bo four points shorter than tho best now obtainable in Sydney, and the man who does not invest until almost the last moment will have the advantage of knowing whether all is well with the chestnut. I did not think Poitrel could win last year with lOst, but, though he did, an additional 51b might have proved his undoing. It will be remarkable if this year's field includes a better horso than Poitrel, and even those who regard Eurythmio in that light would bc°well-advised to wait until almost the , last moment before . supporting that belief with their money." Mr J. B. Corrigan, of Hawera, was an interested visitor at Ashburton yesterday. His New Zealand Trotting Cup candidate Man o' War is training on, and will be a starter at the Benefit Trotting Meeting at Addington next month. F. E. Jones has a team of ten in work at Timarn. His Cup candidate, Rangitata Lass, is in good fettle, and so far has done all that haa been asked j of her. The imported sire Brent Locanda is in pood demand in and around Ashburton. jieoent bookings to him are Hednc, Succeed and Ivy Billon, dam of Locanda Dillon and Copa de Oro. jr. Quincey Maid is on a visit to El Carbine. * . The American-bred mare Bundura, is to be mated with Logan Pointer this j season. . Both Cupidon and Coniston are engaged in tho Hawkesbury Guineas, to bo decided to-day. The Ashhurton and Wanganui Spring Meetings will 0^ 1 in addition tho Birohwood Hunt Club s Annual Meeting is set down for, decision, and a start will be made witH iihe Avondale Jockey Club's Spring Meeting. F. McCabe. at one time a well-known cross-country horseman, ha? forsaken tho saddle and is now training a team of jumpers in Franco. Hector Gray rod© two winners at the Cfttterick Bridge Meeting in England, th© last week in July, steering Cortona and Morning Light to victoryWhalebone writes in the Auckland "Star ,r *—Th© wellrknown Aucklander, Mr B. Bell, • who is at present rcsittenfe in England, intends doing a bit of racing in th© Old Country, and has purchased IH» four-year>old horEO Polyinactms; by Polymelns—Carita, from Lord Glanely. As a yearling Polym&gntra cost 3000gsVlmt up to the w sent haa only won on© race. H© is be- • ing trained by the ©x-Außtralian, J. M. ». Bell, in Berks, and it will ho inter, "eating to not© if the change of staotesj brings about ar change of form. j '.Commentbg on the Novice Handicap I •a't Tattersall r ß Meeting in Sydney, Pilot writes, in the Sydney "Referee":; For the "second year in succession this was won bv a. tbice-year-old trained by R. J. Mason for Mr G. D: Greenwood. Last year" Vesjmeca did ibe> trick,, attd this time Cupidon. Although the latter j had not previously raced; he had been working so well at Randwick in company 'with Gloaming that I had an idea hex would start iavqurito. However, that honour went to another New Zea- ; lander, Lord Martian, but though, in a nice position from the start, fha missed a place. . The speedy Mountaineer led: front Buokra and Etonian at the balfmilej tsttf Cupidon, who took charge tuning, for home, was dear of everything- at the leger. Then Princ© Sandy came vers; fast, but waa unequal to overhannng Cupidon, who ia o medium- - sued, brown gelding by Martian from ' Bebe by Bowman from Bine Water by St. Leger. He was bred by Mr I. Duncan, and Mr Greenwood gave 625gs for him as a yearling. Cupidon's stablecompanion Coniston waa a runner, and showed" whilo Selected, Buckra, Mountaineer, and Publicity, others of tfe unplaced 4ot, are also worth remembering. .

The lot that w«nt outf for the Pensoroft Hurdle- Handicap did. not represent class. Dribble, who waa an almost even-money favourite looked, well, hut ah* did not got near the fighting line. She lost a little ground at every fendo, and, the pace being eolid ; she could not make it up. again. Ths Digger, who was 'making hia first appearance over hurdles, was always in the lead. He lost some ground at several fences through gettingl too close to them, hut had enough pace to run up again. Mandrake was a long way hack in the early stages of the race, hut he put in a great finishing run, and The Digger had to be Btirred up to win. Trentham Rose failed to eee- tlxo dia-tance out, -whila Indus •nd Lyroe, when racing well up and going strongly, lost their chanoes by faulty fencing. Wild Pilgrim, Likelihood, and Bandy did not look capable of getting a place. The outing should do The Digger a lot of good. The publio sent Palestrina out a strong favourite in the Braemar Welter. The Clerenoeuz filly, who wu wrongly curded as a four* year-old, looked in a. claea by herself, but_ in want of racing. Her psrformance in beating the seasoned Some Kid was full of merit, for, while Some Eid waa first away, she waa lost. - After going round her field she was

with him in the le*4 before going four furlongs. The £Uy had to be shaken up to win, which wua not surprising after the run ehe made in the early stages of the race, but her response when called upon waa good, ana augura well for her prospects ia eome of the approaching classics. Sunny Loch, who went out in the lead, could not hold his position, and waa sent back after going three furlongs, and lie did well to finish in fourtu place. Orange Mart was, staying on better thnn any other runner in the race. Eoseday did not "look ready, but it only needs a race or two for him to run better than last. Nautical and Some Kid were «cratched for the Tinwald Handicap. Foo Chow, though looking big, had the appearance of having done a lot of work, and, being a bit on his toe 3, went down keenly in his preliminary. Eleus was gross, while Onslaught looked *he moat seasoned of the runners, but was a trifl? sore. Warlove. looked light and a bit ragged, but Care Reck stripped and went well, and bo did Hiero. Tatau Tatau and Song 1 Bird both looked bright and muscular, but in need of racing. The start was fairly even, and after going two furlongs Winning Hit dropped in behind the leaders tz come out in the straight and win by a little over a length. The judge placed AVarlove second from Cave Ecck. but most people thought Cava Rock had gained that position by a head. Eleus ran a wretched race, and finished last, while Foo Chow, who was always badly placed, finished a lon?'way back. The race will do him good. H:e:o was ridden le-ry wide all the way, and Tatau Tatau was not handled to the "best advantage. Songbird ran a good race na far as he could go, and evidently he lacks stamina.

Pitprop, who was favourite for the Allenton Hack Handicap, was very unlucfr? as he did not get a good start, and then after making up his ground fell back at le;'St four w five lengths, otherwise he would probably have beaten Sembric, who was "particularly well handled by F. E. Jones. She was turned out in fin? fettle, and looks likely to win again before long. Roval Mac won the Alford Hack Welter Handicap, like a racehorse. There was a considerable amount of bumping in the etrai'ht and Petunia got all the worst of it. Urgency, a green half-brother to Malaga, ran a splendid race, and locked sure to pain second place, but *.lv> lnd on him stopped riding.' and the peldin? stopped also. H<* promises to make pood very soon. The Trial Plate wfla the means of introducing a trio of useful three-year-olds in Limelight, Te Kuri, and Blush. Limelight appeared to win with a deal in hand, but Te -Kuri, who ran eecond, was unlucky in getting a. bad passage, and bo was Blush. All the acceptors for the Spring Handicap went to the post. Silver Peak looked very backward, in fact she did not show nearly so much muscle as formerly. Will Oakland and Meteorite- stripped well, and they were solidly supported. The start was spoiled by Corsica- swerving out at barrier rise, and carrying Meteorite with him to the treeu. Will Oakland won very easily. The Selma Trot Handicap attracted a field of twentv-two. .Speculation was brisk, the pool totalling close on £2OOO. Bing Boy was favourite, carrying 50 tickets more than Puni, with Ano Nay, Adelaide Thorpe, and Maibe the best baoked of the others. After a short delay caused through Bing Boy falling the field moved away iu line with the exception of Cognac, who refused! to start. At the end of four. furlongs Fancy Boy was leading Ano Nay by a hundred yards, and looked a likely winner. In the home straight both horses tired, but Fancy. Boy lasted long enough to finish third. The winner turned up in Malachy, a four-year-old gelding by General Mao from a Nabocklish mare. He was poorly supported on the totalisator, and paid over a quarter cf a century. The disappointing Athos. finished fast in second place and also paid a useful dividend. Neither Bing Boy nor Puni appeared prominent in the race, and when Fancy Boy and Ano Nay established such a. long lead it did not look as if the majority of the- drivers were over anxious to fully extend their horses.
