I . His Excellency the Governor-General attended 'the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting at Riccarton on Saturday, and left by the ferry steamer in the evening for Wellington. Lady the Hon.* Lucy Jellicoe are remaining in Christchurch as the guests of Mr and Mrs J. Montgomery, "Holmbrook," Fendalton. A London message savs Mr J. J. Virgo will begin his eighth world tour in the interest of the Y.M.C.A., in September, proceeding direct to Melbourne, via Cape Town. Mr S. Cumming, postmaster at Masterton for the past bjx years, is retiring from the service at the end of September. Mr Cumming, joined the service in Otago early in 1873. Mr T. S. Weston, of Wellington, President of the N.Z. Employers' Federation, will arrive in Christchurch on Wednesday, and will attend the annual meeting of the Canterbury Employers' Association to. be held on that evening. The Chief Postmaster at Blenheim, *Mr W. A. S. Willcox, has informed his head office that he desiresj» retire on superannuation as from September 30fch. Mr Willcox has completed 45 jears' service with the Post and Telegraph Department. During the dinner hour at the Hillside (Dunedin) Workshops on Friday, Mr J. Mcßeath, foreman painter, who has been promoted to a responsible position at Addington, was the recipient of a set of dinner and dessert knives from the employees in the paint shop. Mr A. '£. Farrant, who made the presentation, referred in flattering terms to the respect and goodwill in which Mr M'Beath was held by all with whom he came in contact. He had served his time in the Hillside Workshops, and rose from an apprentice to the highest rung in the ladder of his own department. Later 'in the afternoon Mr L. W. Roberston, workshops manager, \presented Mr M'Beath with an umbrella on behalf of the foremen and office staff, and in so doing said that they were parting with *liim with regret and were losing a good comrade and one who always looked after the interests of the department..
