RATE IN HURUNUI RIDING.
TO TTTB BBITOR OF "TB* PHE9S." Sir,—ln yesterday's issue of your paper appears a very interesting account of the last meeting of the Waipara County Council. It appears as if an attempt was being made by the Council to increase the rate m the Hurunui riding. This riding is the largest in the, county, because it carries a larger portion of poor laud. From enquiries I have made, I am led to believe that the riding in question has had a large credit for many years, and just when the farmers' finances are at their lowest ebb an increase of about 70 per cent, is not only considered, but also nearly passed. If ratepayers will press for improvements, I presume the Council has no other alternative but to rate for tfhem, At a time like this I would have thought the member for the riding would have called his constituents together to discuss so important a matter. As an elector, 1 should like to ask him if he haß studied the ratepayers' interests in not acquainting electors (especially at a time like this) that Buch a large increase was anticipated. During the present period of poor prices for produce, etc., and the tight-ness-of the money market, men of keen business ability are required to manage the affairs of the county.—Yours, etc., THE PEAKS.
