UNEMPLOYMENT IN AUSTRALIA.
A GROWING PEOBLEM. (By C»M»-'Pm«* As^aH<»--Cbipjrrlgn«.) (Aiutrilian »nd N.& Cable Amw.iaMon.) (Received August 11th, 8.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 11. Unemployment is growing mops prevo* lent in Sydney and other industrial centres. The trouble is being increased by theFederal Government discharging largo numbers at Cockatoo Island dockyard, the Lithgow email arms factory, and other works, and by the Governments of the various States economising through public Works and other channels. Similarly private employers, owing to slackness of business and the constant demands for higher wages with shorter hours, are reducing expenses ohd shortening hancfl wherever possible. All the States are more Or less affected. Unemployed demonstrations »ro ieJririg place in various cities, and the papers teem with appeals to supplement the already generous Government aid for the distressed crowds of werkless men and allegedly starving women and children. In Sydney, high, rents are forcing families in the industrial suburbs to pack like sardines.
