BOROUGH COUNCILS.

ASHBTOTON. At the last meeting of the Ashhurton Borough Council tho Mayor (Mr,B. Galbraith) presided.. It was reported that the amounts received since the last meeting had, totalled 795 Is 2d, It was decided to thank Mr Justice Herdman for a copy of J. H. A. Pedder's statement exonerating all the Council employees from any bhuae in connexion with the defalcations for which Pedder was recently sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment. Nine residents of Church street, Hempstead, petitioned the Counoil to repair t£e footpath. It was decided to cancel the taxi-cab driver's SSfcise held by F. Porter, in consequence of the police report. The Ashburton butchers wrote Miring for certain improvements in the cattle pens at the abattoir. '' The abattoir manager reported that, out of nearly 60CO oattle which had been slaughtered, not more than four had been down, and these had been very wild. The matter was referred to the Abattoir Committee for a report. ' KAIAPOL The fortnightly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council was held last night. Present—Tie Mayor (Mr J. H. Blackwell), Crs. R. Dunn, T. R. Leithead, I'. Thome, J. Hirst, H. W. Trouffelot, J. G. Yellowlees, H. Mcintosh, W. B. Scott. The Domain aid Beautifying Committee reported having inspected Darnley square, andT recommended that the Council allocate the sum of' £3O on next year's estimates for improvements to the. tennis court; also that a fence be erected round the Municipal Baths, to protect the shrubs. The committee skorecommended that the south rivenbank, between the two bridges, be cleared. The report was adopted. It was decided to again request the Bailway Department to have the alarm bolls at the High street railway crossing removed to the intersection of Hilton and liUller streets. The Mayor drew the attention of the Council to the proposed legislation being brought forward by the Minister of Publio Works with'reference to the upkeep of main roads, and pointed, out that the boroughs on the main roads would not participate in tho taxes: levied that T.ould be expected to maintain their portion of the road as sX present.

It was uecided to obtain the opinion of other boroughs similarly situated, with a view to drawing the Minister's attention to the injustice which would be done to boroughs eo situatea.
