RECTOR OF CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
DR. CHILTON'S APPOINTMENT. At yesterday's meeting of the Board of Governors ofLCanterbury College, a letter was read from Dr. 0. Chilton, acknowledging receipt of the Board's letter offering him tho position of Rector of the College. Dr. Chilton wrote that tho position was one entirely unsought by him, and ho deeply appreciated the honour the Board had done him in making the offer. He added: '.'l am fully aware of the responsibility of the position, and the ep> portunities it offers for advancing the welfare of the College, and 1 id not unmindful of the labour involved, and of the difficulty in filling the position with satisfaction to the Board, and comfort to myself. I hare, therefore, carefully considered the offer as it affects my relations to the Board of ernors, to the Professorial Board, and to the interests of the students and the College'in general, and I have decided to accept the offer. I am one of the earliest students and graduates of the College, and a considerable portion of my life has been spent in connexion with it. The prospect of devoting my remaining years of activity to the service of the College is most gratifying to me." # The chairman (Mr H. D. Aefawd) mpved that Dr. Chilton be formally appointed Rector of Canterbury College as from August Ist. Mr Adams said that while he recognised that the appointment of Dr. Chilton as Rector would be of great benefit to the College, he considered that in view of the large amount of work being done at present, and the amount of apade work in connexion with the new appointment. Dr. Chilton should not be asked to take up his new duty until early year. He moved, as an amendm. Nt, that the • appointment should date as from January Ist, 1923. This would allow Dr.- Chilton an opportunity to fully cons : d»»r all tne arrangements to be made, both in the BintoB» cal Department of the College, and jof the position of Rector. i . Several members spoke in fnrmto the early appointment, and Mr Adai&S said that, after having heard the opinions expressed, he would withdraw ml amendment, as be did not want to see a division on the subject. /.■'" The motion making the appointment begin as from August Ist, was carried unanimously.
