~ There 'was applause not only before but behind the curtain at His Majesty's Theatre on Wednesday night (says the Auckland "Star"). At the interval there came a sound of clapping from the stage which made the audienca wonder what was being enacted beyond their "3yes. It was Miss Vera St. John and Mr Tom Campbell receiving felici- ' tations. Miss St. John, who plays Jes- ! sica, Shylock's daughter, in "The Mer- j •chant of Venice," had just run away ' to bo married to Lorenzo, the curtain dropping on the rage* and grief of the deserted father. As a matter of fact, Miss St. John had already that day been quietly married in reality to Mr Campbell, the chief mechanic of tho Allan Wilkie Company. The pair were warmly congratulated, and were handed a handsome present on behalf of other members Sftf the company. Then | the play proceeded. " j I The presence of two smartly-attired j young women in the procession of un- | employed in the city yesterday caused j some little surprise amongst the spec--1 tators (says Thursday's Auckland : 'Star"). The diversion was wholly ■ unexpected, and' not a few of the public ! 0,1 tiie sidewalks were curious as to ■■ whether the women were serious and really seeking work, for as they marched their countenances never lost ilium- ■' mating smiles. Inquiries made elicited , tho information that the young women are seeking employment as tailoresses, having lost their positions in the trade in the retrenchment that took place in certain factories whereby large numbers of girls are • idle to-day. The annual ball of the Selwyn Club, 1 which was so successfully carried out ' last Wednesday evening in the Art Gal- ( lery, had no connexion with tho Selwyn < Hockey Club. <

The ballroom. which was charmingly decorated in blue and white, proved scarcely large enough for the gathering. Great pains bad been taken with many of the dresses, and the .Grand March, including, as it did. a large number of very interesting tiny tots, made a very gay spectacle, both in colouring and in variety of costumes. During the evening some games were played, musical "hot and cold" being quite the most popular. The sub-committee responsible for the arrangements consisted of Mrs F. Barber, and Messrs G. A. Alexander. J. Browr.e and H. G. Bailey, The programme was ably carried out by Miss Wilson, Miss-Hnnham. Miss Andrews, Miss Paul, and Messrs G. F. Allen and A. J. T. Withers.
