VISIT TO THE SOUTH. Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral, Viscount Jellicoe and Viscountess Jellicoe, arrived from Wellington on Saturday morning, and went on to I>unedin by the second express. Their Excellencies will visit a number of centres in Southland, Otago, and South Canterbury, and will arrive in Chrktchurch on August Bth, and will stay here during Grand National week. AN ASHBUETON WELCOME. A Jiumber of members of the Ashburton County Council went to Rakaia on Saturday morning to officially welcome Viscount Jellicoe on his entry into the county on his way South. The members present were: Messrs C. Reid (chairman), G. Murdoch, W. G. Gallagher, F. Frampton, and W. T. Lill, and they were accompanied by the county engineer (Mr C. Morrison), the county clerk (Mr F. Mainwaring), and Messrs A. Magson and Tfios. Blaokley. The Governor-General waa welcomed on the station platform, Mr C. Roid being the spokesman. He expressed a hope that his Excellency would find an opportunity of seeing the district more thoroughly than could be done by merely passing through by train. His .Excellency thanked Mr Re id for his thoughtfulneas in arranging a meeting of welcome at Rakaia. He stated that he hoped to have an opportunity of coming to the district to do some deer stalking. He also made enquiries as to the fitting in the AshbUrton district rivers. Membere of the Council assured his Excellency that there was first-class sport of both kinds to be had in the county. . Lady Jellicoe was also interested m the sport of the county, and said she hoped to be present at some of the hunt meetings.
