WATER SUPPLY BOARD.

WAIMAKAEIEI-ASHLEY. A meeting of the "Waimakarirl-Ashloy Water Supply Board was held last week, when tho chairman (Mr Cooper) and all mem-' berß were present. A voto of sympathy was extended to the family of the late Mr Bichard Evans, mem' bere standing. The Board's balanco-slioet was received from the Controller and Auditor General, certified oorrect and without a tag. It was resolved to advertise it as open to inspection by ratetpayers in the usual manner. The Public Trustee, Wellington, notified the Board that its business with him as regards interest and sinking fund accounts would hi future be transacted in the Ohristohurch office. Mr R. O. Dixon wrote relative to No. 1 race on the bank of the Wuimaikariri. The surveyor was requested to bring the matter under the notice of the ranger to remedy. • Mir G. W. Bobb wrote, in reference to the race through his property at Cust being l unsatisfactory. Tho secretary and Mr Wayland were asked to inspect a,nd report. Mr Samuel Smith wrote regarding the race from tho Cust intake and tho. bridge over tho main race at West Eyreton. Left to the secretary to attend to. Mr J. W. Mackay wroto asking if the Board had given notice of its intention to extend tho main groyne at Brown'B Bock, or was it merely under discussion. The secretary ,was directed to reply that the Board did not consider it necessary to give notice of its protective works, and that there had not been any extension, of tie groyne in question, only discussion pn the point. The Malvern County Council also wrote upon the subject of Brown'e Bock protective works, informing the Board that a deputation which waited on, them suggested such works were causing an undue diversion of the stream to the eouth side. The chairman moved, "That the mem'bere of the Malvern County Council be invited to an inspection of Brown's Rock headwords, with 8> view to their seeing the protective works put in- by the Board for trio safety of their heactrace; they to appoint a day suitable to themselves •by giving a few d-aye' notice." The chairman drew attention to a defective bridge over the main race on the Ohoka road near Mr Rodgers'e. It was decided that it he repaired. . v M.r Sbeat was granted permission to take a small lead of water from a race to Euipply an engine used for ploughing. , i' In regard to the suggested alteration of tne main race in Springbank, it waa agreed that Messrs, Waller, Wayland, and the surveyor arrange to meet Mr Forsyth to inspect the locality and report. • The surveyor's report, which waa adopted, stated th%t dun## the previous three weeks the daily average depth of water on sill of intake at Brown's Book' headwords had been 4ft Bin, and during the time the race was running the daily average depth of water passing the flume at Block Cuttinsf had been 2ft, giving a full supply to the district. All waiter was 'Shut off for one Week from July 9th to ,16th, to enable ratepayers to clean raoea, out fences, etc., and advantage was taken of the opportunity of having many portions, of the Board's parts-of races attended to. One flood rising to Bft lftin OB the gates occurred in the river, but no damage was done. The river was in a favourable position, but' it might be necessary to employ the team to open up a ohanuel to improve the supply. Tie position would be carefully' watohed. There waa a small quantity of shingle in the tunnel, and also some in the "Nine Chains," but this would not interfere with the supply of water, and would be removed when the team returned to the headworks, without the necessity of turning off, the water, except for ® few hours at a time. The teaim had been doing good work down the country nnder Rangers Sprigga and Murphy, repairing forde, carting shingle for cement work, dragging and cleaning main races through Springbank and at Ferntida. Broom und gorsje and manuka had been grubbed along Scanlan's race, and the headrace below No. 6 race, and also below Scanlan's gates had received attention.
