MONKEY MURDERER.
One of the most interesting dgfcftl that the Crown Prince of Japan saw during his visit to Gibraltar a few weeks ago was the- famous colony of monkeys, which live in their native state of freedom. These "Barbary Apes" have so declined that it is believed only eight of tJhera rarvivo. A strange outbreak of crime is responsible for the reduction of the famous colony. The oldest male monkey on tho Bock recently developed a passion for murdering the females of his race. When the decrens© in their numbers was traced to this simian Landru he was captured and all his teeth token out. It was hoped that this would moke him harmless, but an irresistible craving for slaughter led him to uso guile. Employing all the powers and attractions which old age .and villainy still left) him, ho proceeded to lure the female monkeys to tho highest point of the Rock, where, suddenly seizing Iftcnj. he would hurl them over tho cliff, at the foot of which the mangled bodies of the confiding creatures were afterw, irdß found. With scores of crime* W his charge the monkey murderer w»4 at last caught again and exiled to the Zoo, but the monkey tribe of Gibraltarhas never from tho havoo ho wrought, and visitors seldom catch sight of them.
