LANCE ItECTTTBE. The first series of lectures on First Aid w36 gfveii. in the Town Hall this week, when Dr. F. Slater gave an instructive address, there being an. attendance of twenty-five. Next week the Brigade nurses from Christchurch will be in attendance, and a demonstration 0 f practical work will be given. LADLES' RIFLE CLUB. The members of the Sumner-Redcliffß Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club concluded a competition on Thursday evening for it trophy presented by Misses Wood and Foster. The first place was won by Miss M. Peers, with a score of 69, while Mrs Hall was runner-up. VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE. The quarterly meeting of the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade was held last night. Superintendent J. Carter presiding over a full attendance. A resolution of sympathy was passed with the widow and family of the late Fireman J. Griffiths. The chairman stated that he expected the new motor would come to hand early next month. It wns decided to hold the annual social on Friday, July Ist. Fireman J. O'Neil was recommended to the Council for the position of driver, and secretary B. Lindroos for the position of assistantdriver. It waa reported that a number of .fire-beaters used ift connexion with the grass fire at Eedcliffs, had not yet been returned to the sub-station. It was resolved to five a subscription to the Hamilton brigade, which was inviting help for the dependants of the late' Fireman Prince, who was killed whilst responding to the call of duty. ' FANCY DEESS DANCE. One of the most successful children s fancy-dress dances ever given in tho seaside suburb took place in the Sumner Town, Hall last night, when Mesdames S. W. Dean and A. R. Corson entertained the scholars from the School for the. Deaf and Dumb, together with a large gathering of other local children. The hall was tastefully decorated in «, red and black colour scheme, gild this, together with the children's dresses, jpresented a remarkably pretty sight. The costumes were both varied and original, and the delightful tea which wa» served in the ' Was by no means the least appreciated part of the, children's entertainment. During, the evening several special dances were given by a number of tiny tote. Each child was presented, with fruit and a box of sweets before departing.
