The Borough Council agreed to support a proposal by the holders of leases of sections in the Greymouth native reserve, who are desirous :of purchasing the freehold, to promo.te-a Bill for the purpose .> of giving an opportunity • of; purchasing the freehold, such Bill *o contain provisions empowering the Publie"- Trustge to _ sell to the Greynlouth Borough Council, on behalf, of the leaseholders of the native reserve,; at the present unimproved'value, estimated at about £140,000. Various councillors urged .that it would be good for the town generally , if thb. freehold, rights could be obtained; . The present leases were a great drawback to the town. Many of the buildings' were not fit to use, but the owners would riot rebuild in brick on their present title, as if they did build, the only-result .would be that the Maoris would put up the rent. The Mayor (Mr J, IX. Lynch) said he was.sure.that the Maoris.would welcome the proposal.' No injustice to the Maoris was uesired. -
