SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

arnst and hannan in great " FORM. notes on the training. (SrZCIAL TO ''i-j! PRESS.'') BLENHEIM, May 27. "I'm feeling well and going well,'' said "Dick" Arnst in reply to a query as to how he felt, and he certainly does look very fit. "In Australia," said las champion, • before I commenced training, I weighed l'Jsi slb in my clothes, and ai I stand now I weigh Hst liib, suid expect to row under 14st.' Ta.. manner in. wnich h»3 clothes hang oil iiiia 13 evid-enee tniu ' has got iil of a tlciil. iluOi*B lllilolillt \JI iron coajiiiuuon nas madi.- ol une grina ot an a i.e as &■> tuys u> 14, "Ab us c.et i w»s in my me. Arnst rows twice ciaily, and cycles long (iutaiicca; morning ana uiterii6ou. He is his own tiauier, and hia metnojs are peculiarly his own —no long luubing down after a row, just a shower, and ihen back home to bea, where he sounds lui»i an hour 'in tha blannets, aitl-r which he lecls iresh and supple, wiinout a. trace of weariness aiter Ilia strenuous row. Arnst lakes no liquid whatever not even a glass o: water, totween meal's, and to this ha'attributes his abiiivy to get off hi 3 weight so iei.dily. Hannan is also hard at it, and hia trainer, George warehani, has- him in rare buck.e. With vigorous ruubiug and massaging, xiiUinan is now in the pink of condition. His skin is like satin, and his muscular development is a. credit to his trainer. The chailerger has been doing exceptionally good work on the river, and finishes a long, hard row seemingly without an effort. 'ihis week Hannan did some fast work over short "courses, and the times he put up excelled anything he did when preparing lor his match with Fogwell. ! Hannan was most unfortunate in wrecking one of hia boats, as when, tha accident happened, lie was doing a trial over tha full course, and the time proutiscd to beat anything yet done on the river. Next week Arnst will be doing really fast work, sprinting and ho-pping off the mark, and towards the end will have a genuine. try out over the full course. His boat ia riding light in the water now, and carries his weight really, well. For the first couple of weeks "Dick" yearly buried her; being off her racing lines, she dragged like a punt. Now she runs very sweetly, and gives the impression of being an exceptionally boat. Hannan will not be inconvenienced by the loss of his boat, ao he' lias a eistei' boat to the wrecked craft—the one in which ho beat Fogwell. She is a splendid calm weather boat, but cannot stand up to a'. sea. like his third boat, built by Neilson. At this time of year the' Wairau is like a sheet of glass for weeks on end, and Hannan will, no doubt, be able to race in hia Towns shell, which is one of the fastest boats ever built' bv that great craftsman. The final deposit is due on Saturday week, June 4th. The articles governing the match stipulate a stake of £250 aside, with provision for an extension to £3OO, and' it is likely that the latter sum will be put up by the backers of the rival scullers.
