CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION.
f , air attendanwr at Lancaster i~f,n Saturday, when the Canterbury Kagby union competitions were oontinued in Practically aU interest W , e between Marists and an< J' a rattling good game, M&rwta -wen by 12 points to 6. Linwood treated a mnpriso by easily b«ating' Old iioya, and Chrifetdmrch showed improved form in defeating Albion by * good margin.
MARISTS (12) v. MERIVALE (5). Marists and Merivale played on the Oval at Lancaster Park, and a fine display of football resulted. Merivale, per medium of thwr forwards, attacked from the opening wniatle, and even play-followed for the first five minutes. The Marists' backs and forwards then combined in a good rush, which was followed by a short passing rush, and K&nfi got over, ljut failed with the kick. Fast open play followed, the ball travelling from end to. end of the ground with great tF* v •®^®" va^e attacked' strongly, and Penberthy had a shot at goal from an easy angle, but missed. , The Blues continued to press, but the Marists' defence was good. However, they were finally rewarded. Brosnahan failed badly to take a. ball with the Merivale forwards on him, and Forsyth had a clear run in. Penberthy kicked a good goal, and Merivale were two points ahead. The Merivale forwards kept up the pressure, and a lightning dribbling -rush looked extremely dangerous, but a top hard kick near the goal line spoiled the chance, and 'Brosnahan forced just in time.. Mariste pressed from the drop out, and swooped down to • the Merivale 25, where a penalty gave Kane a shot, but his kick waa charged down. A minute later Peterson came through, and had Thompson, the Merivale full-back, bustled, but the ball hit his chest, and Merivale forced off the rebound, Blazey saved cleverly when H. Mullins was looking dangerous, and then the Merival® forwards again took charge, and invaded the Marists' twenty-five, but judicious kicking-by x the Greens' backs, and neat "play by Kirwan reversed the position. However, Brosnan, the Merivale half, came through prettily, but Brosnahan saved the situation, and a fine passing rush by the Greens' backs ensued, in which H. Mullins gathered up in execrable pass oplendidldy, and passed back *o Londiigan, but" Blazey intercepted neatly, and found touch near half-way. The game continued to be fast and open, and the spectar tors were roused to a high pitch of enthusiasm. Kane , had a. good attempt at goal from a penalty which went very close, and then a splendid rush -by the Merivale backs took play right to Marists' line. H. Mullins broke through sensationally, and a olever centre saw J. Mullins in possession and off at full speed for the line. He beat Thompson badly, and scored in. a handy position, but Kane's kick hit the post. Merivale again attacked, and. play was about half-way when' half time sounded, with Maxists leading by 6 points 'to 5. Marists opened the second spell with a hot attack, and'a lucky speculator got Merivale out of trouble just in time. An exchange of kicks saw play settle-at halPway, and then the Merivale backs and forwards combined in a sweeping rush, which had Marists thinking hard for a few moments. Long kioking by their backs cleared, and the Greens then repeated Merivale's effort, but a couple of penalties enabled Merivale .to clear, and their forwards followed up with a magnificent rush. Thfe defence was, however, very solid, and BroSnahan wae responsible for some safe fielding and judicious kicking. A high claßs of football was now being shown, and the excitement was intense. The play was very hard-, and temporary injuries were numerous. _ Both sides were playing with great dash, with the balance of power in favour of M&risto. _ Eventually McCormick made a nice opening, and the ball travelled aoross the back line to H.. Mullins, who, after a determined run, got over wide out. Hot did not add to the score. Merivale attacked again, and it was well for Marists that they-had Brosnahan. looking after their interests in the rear. A good shot- by Penberthy from a penalty forced Marißtß, who were again forced a minute later by a pot that Went and then play shifted to the- other end, where a senseless speculator into the middle of the field let McCormick away, and his pass to-E. Mullins ended in that player being thrown, out right at the corner. Once' again the Merivale forwardl came away, and the next five minutes' play was right on the Greens' line, Merivale just failing to boom on several occasions. Marists even-* tually oleared with'ft pehalty, and a moment later Brosnahan saved them with a splendid .mark. In the concluding stages Marists set up a determined attack a,nd J. Mullins took a pass sptendidly low down when going at full speed, - scoring in • the last minute of the game. Kane's -kick failed, and the firtal -whiatle sounded -with the score:—Marists 12, Merivafe;s r Mr S. M.. Taylor was referee.' '• ( CHRISTCHURCH (27) v. LINWOOD (11) v. OLD BOYS (3). Old Boys lost the toss, and kicked off against the wind. There woe a good deal of scrambling forward play, until Boag broko away snd looked dangerous. Old Boys attacked for a spell, but were met by sound 'tacklmg. Then the Linwood forwards took charge, and swept play to'the Old Boys' lure, where. Wright scored, Davis failing to convert Linwood continued to attack, but Burns effected a fine save. the end- fit the first spell, a brilliant passing ruph by the Old Boys' backs, 'in which Blackmore, Guiney, Boag, Thompson, and Boag again took part,, let the last-named, over, but the referee ruled one of the/passes offside. Half-time was called with the play in' Old Boys' half. ■ . , With the wind behind them, Old Boys set np a series of attacks, but the passing was not 4f a very high order, and Linwood were able to keep them out. Linwood set up a good passing rush, Watßon being tackled near the line. However, the forwards carried on. - and Hewitt scored alongside the posts, Davis converting-. Ijinwood continued to attack, Turpin and W. Cummings being prominent. Gilliee marked in a handy position, snd Davis kicked a goal.
