RIFLE SHOOTING.

CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION.

At Bcdclifrs on Saturday, the annual prizefiring meeting of the Canterbury Military District was commenced, the day being taken up with Service matches. A nor'-west wind was blowing, but the marksmen suffered little inconvenience. The South Island Championship will be fired to-day. The chief range officer is Lieutenant-Colonel F. B. Creswell, V.D., and the statistical department is under the charge of Lieutenant Foster. The prize-list haa been slightly .reduced in the Rifle Club and Cadet sections, owing to the entries not quite reaching the number anticipated, but in tho circumstances the lists are very satisfying to competitors. Saturday's results were: — A SERIES.

Heney, who placed, five bulls and then, dropping- to on inner, closed at one short of the possible. On the No. 1 target Mehrtens made a similai score, and Muno failed only in the first ehot, aB. RifleMan T. Thompson, of Rangiora, missed, the bull on his sixth shot, and closed with' 27. The only other possible for the match waa scored by S taff-Sergt.-Major Frank, of N.Z.P.S., whose grouping, at 20 proved unfortunate. Amongst the Senior Cadets, the B.H.S. representative, Petre, with a full soofe at lOdyds, was beaten, by two point? by Sergt. Davy, whose 4, 8, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, was a nice exhibition of shooting.
