During 1920, 43,491 whb were either arrested oi' summoned, wero brought before tho Magistrate's Courts in tho Dominion. Ot theso 16,105, wcro arrested and 27,386 brought beforo the Court on summons. Tho fetnalo offenders totalled 2399 and tho males 41,092. The details are published in last week's "Gazette," which points out that for tho purpose of reckoning each offence has been set down as a distinct person. The cases were disposed of as follow: Dischat*sd for want of or want of evidence, 3594; dismiftseti ou merits; 2316; admonished and discharged, 82o; committed for sentence, 719; committed for trial, 530; summarily convicted, 33,580 (males), 1937 (females). . The classification of 'summary convictions sets out that 747 wero convicted of assaults and other offences agaidst the person, 109 on th® score of burglary, robbery, stealing from the person, and kindred offences, 3509 for theft ahd other offences against property only, and 203 for forgery and offences againstcurrency. For drunkenness convictions were entered against 8374 men and 519 / women, while 1567 men and 106 women wero made the subject of prohibition orders. Other offences against "good order" numbered 8183. Under tho Revenue Acts 73 persons were convicted of selling liauor without a license and 118 for other breaches. A total of 12,311 convictions wero sustained on the pcow of. offences relating to "carrying out laws and against public; welfare. Excluding multiple charges and not reckoning each offence as a distinct person, a total of 37,188 persote were brought before the Lower Courts in tho ' Dominion, of whom 81,026 (including 1708 females) were summarijy convicted.
