CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING

GEEAT EASTER HANDICAP DAY.

Held as it is when South Island farmers have finished harvesting operations for the year, the Autumn Meeting of the. Canterbury Jockey Club is always a popular one with country as well as with city people who go out to enjoy their Easter holidays. Though North Islanders do not patronise this fixture in such large numbers as at the Grand National or New Zealand Cup Meetings, the different districts will be well represented, and all parts of the South Island will have strong contingents present, and the big lawns in the enclosures at Riccarton will be as well filled as at any previous Easter gathering. Riccarton has never looked better than at present, the bounteous rains which nave fallen of late* have given the lawns, gardens, and shrubs a springlike appearance, and those people who visit the faiyous course to-day, more with an idea of a day's outing than with a wish to back their fancies, will find pleasure in wandering about the splendid enclosures. The two principal races of the day are the Champagne Stakes and the long-established Great Easter Handicap. The presence of the unbeaten crack two-year-old Mermin has caused a number of owners to cancel the engagements of their youngsters, preferring to wait for another day than tackle the flying son of Absurd, who has already won seven races this season, and looks likelv to win more; yet the two-year-old classic will not be altogether devoid of interest,, for Pluto and Winning Hit, if not of the highest class among the two-year-olds, are yet cap* able of making the best of them gallop, and nothing unforeseen will nepd to happen to Mermin during the race if he is to beat fliem. The Great Easter Handicap is a very open race. Sasanof, despite his big weight, has been doing such good work since he arrived at headquarters that he will have a host of friends, and indeed would have had more if he had had one race during the last few weeks. Chimera and Tigntiya have also done splendidly on the tracks, and so has Will Oakland, w;hile Solfanello, Satisfaction, Killowen, Sunny Corner, and Clean Sweep have all got through their tasks-in a manner little below that of the others mentioned. Of those engaged in the minor events,Egotism, Absurdum, Scrimmage, Insurrection, Orange Mart, Humboldt, and AVartone have perhaps done rather better than the horses that will be opposed to them. The first race is timed to start at 11.30 a.m., and from an early hour special trams will be waiting to convey people to tho course, while those who' prefer the train will find a splendid service at their disposal, the first train being timed-to start at 10.10 a.m. This will be followed at intervals of ten minutes by four more. TJhe card for the day is as follows:
