YESTERDAY'S FUNCTIONS.

Several functions in connexion, with the University tournament were held yesterday. In the morning about 100 local and visiting attended the 11 o'clock service at the Cathedral. In tho afternoon a large number were conveyed to the Hills and Sumner in special trams, a- pleasant time being spent. Afternoon tea was provided. A social tea, organised by the Canterbury College branch of the Chrfotian_Lnion, was held in the Y.M.C.A., at o p-m-> and was very attended. After tea members of the different University Christian Unions spent an hour discussing the work of the Union, wie University Club, in the Starland Buildings, was again well patronised later in the evening, and the opportunities of social intercourse thus afforded were taken full advantage of.

TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME.

To-day's proceedings in the tournament will be opened with the University Athletic Championship, which will commence at Lancaster Park, at .11. a.m. Tho programme consists of twenty-two athletic and field events, ip all of'which it is expected competition wili bo very keen ami close. Each centre has entered its best team, and, as all are in about the .'same form, every event will probably be foiight lout to the last vard in a way which will not allow of any runaway; wins. This, from the point of new ot both competitors and spectators, will ensure that interest does not flag in any way during the championship. A spice of uncertainty is added to this years championship j, by tho fact that some of the runners are not, as yet, very well known athletically, and are regarded as "dark horses." It is anticipated that if tho weather conditions are at all favourable, some-records will be broken. ' Relaxation from the rigours of athletic tournament will be offered tonight at 9 o'clock, when the University ball will be held, in the Metropolitan Trotting Club's Tea Kiosk, at Adding ton.
