Constable Kinsella',. at whom Tomaveff fired first, said that he tihanked Mr" Brookfield for saving his life. Ike Russian fired at Kinsella in ihe refreshment room, the bullet grazing Mr Brookfield's arm. ' i Mr Brookfield borrowed a- revolver and rushed at Tomayejf. _ After some scuffling, Kinsella saw Mr Brookfield drop, saying "i am done! He has shot me in the stomach I" A former landlord of Tomayeff at Broken Hill says that Tomayeff left on Tuesday evening, with all his belongings, including a mattress. He said that Jie was going to Adelaide for work. A woman with whom he was keeping company had died, and the Russian had been despondent since. He displayed a streamer on his bedroom wall, reading: "Long live the Federated Industrial Soviet Republic of, B.ussia!" He also (had photographs of Trotzky, Lenin, and the twelve I.W.W. prisoners. When he was asked by the police if he had any statement to make, • Tomayeff said: "Yes! I shot everybody because I was afraid_ of two men, with knives and poison, in the train, ivho wanted to kill me. They catch hold of my arms. Every time I see.a man I shoot him." Mr Brookfield, while on route to the hospital, was asked why he took risks, and replied: "I took it for the women! I am nothing!" " SYDNEY, March 34.
