Ho was ordained priest in 1801, was appointed Vicar Apostolic, North Carolina, in 1868, Bishop or Richmond in 1872, Archbishop of Baltimore in 1877, nnd was made a Cardinal in 1886.] i ME E. W. HOENUNO. LONDON, March 24. The.death'is announced of Mr E. W. Hornung, the novelist. [Erneet William Hornung, novelist and was born at Middlesborough in 1866, and educated at Uppingham School. He went to Australia in 1884, and spent two years there. His numerous novels include "A Bride from the Bush" 1890, "Under Two Skies" 1892, "Stingaree" 1905, "Fathers of Men" 1812, "Witching Hill" 1913, and "The Crime Doctor" 1914.] MR HUGEt HEPBURN. Mr Hugh Hepburn, who passed peacefully away at hta residence in Clyde road, Riocarton, aged 78 years, always took a keen interest in the progress of Riccarton, and latterly in the welfare of the Presbyterian Church in P.uriri Btreet. 'At the age of nineteen years, the late Mr Hepburn left his native town of Ayr, _ Scotland, and, shortly after arriving in New Zealand, began work at the foundry of the late Mr John Anderson, where he remained ns foreman of the moulding shop, for twenty-eight years. After taking a holiday, He, with his two sons, established the business of H. Hepburn and Sons, ironfounders. The funeVal toolf place at the Riccarton churchyard, and was largely attended. Many beautiful wreaths were laid on the grave. The bifrial service was conducted by the Rev. H. T. York, and later by members of the Masonic Crown Lodge, of which the deceased had' been a Past Master. He had also been one of the founders of the Druids' Mistletoe Lodge. A widow, two sons, and three daughters, are left to mourn their loss. News has been received by Mr J. I Gamble, of Hill street, Wellington, of the death at Batavia, on February 17th, of his son, Mr Robert Gamble, for many years known as Mr Robert Alton, who, until quite recently, was advance agent of Harmston'a Circus in the East The Consul-General at Batavia has informed Mr Gamble that the remains were interred in the British section of the new European cemetery at Retamboeratij Batavia. {The late Mr-Gamble was bom at Wellington forty-six years ano, and was educated at the Marist Brothers' School. From his youthful days he took a great interest in athletics, and, when quite a young man he. with two other young Wellingtonians, joined Fitzgerald's Circus, and mndo quite a name for himself in Australia and the East. It was in the East that the late Mr Gamble joined Harmston, and, after a period of active circus work, he went "on ; the road" as advance agent to the company.
