THE MURRAY TELEGRAPH PRINTERS.

PARTS or TWENTY MACHINES ARRIVE. . The Murray electric telegraph printing machine is one of the marvels of the ago. The Wellington Telegraph Department has been'trying to get some of these machines for seven or eight years •with little success, until the Chief Telegraph Engineer (Mr E. A. Shrimpton) went to England last year. H 4 managed to accelerate matters, -with the result that tho vibrators and , keyboards of twenty "Murrays" have arrived, and when the distributors and printers to correspond with them come to hand next month there will be ah interesting development in connexion with the business of dispatching te.egrams. The Murray has a very compact keyboard similar to that of a typewriter, and operated in the same manner. The paper tape is fed between two rows of steel points —five in number. These are the plungere, and the dies, and as a key representing a letter is pressed, the corresponding combination of points is exposed, and at. the same instant an arm works across and presses the tape against the dies. The tapo is then "fed" away telegraphically, and its message comes out printed at its destination. One of the great advantages of a "Murray" is that it can be installed in a newspaper office, and whilst a reporter is transcribing his notes for his own paper they can bo "Muyayed'' to Auckland or Christchurch—providing the necessnry plant is installed to receive and distribute. A demonstration of the working of the Murray is not possible until the rest of the parts turn up next month. "
