The Sumner Borough Council uiet last night. Present—The. Mayor . (tho Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C.), Cls. T. Dryburgh, H. C. Jnmieson, W. (r. *Blac>c, •H. J. Yates, C. E. Whitfield.' . • Correspondence wa® received from the Minister o£ Internal Affairs regarding beach patrols, statins that tho Government voted £250 each to tho Swimming Association and the Royal Life Saving Society, and thai the matter jested with tho local authority. The Lytteltan Harbour Board abated that it could not accept tho Council's terms for tho jetty at He-athccte. A request from certain ratepayers for a remission of the 10 per cent .penalty on rates was refused. ' , . Mr J. H. Ogier should bo offered a four years' lease, of the Hot Salt Water Baths, on certain conditions; that leave should be granted Superintendent .T. Fire Brigade; that, on the recommendation of the Sumner School Committee, the Major should invite tho residents and business people of the borough to observe a close holiday on to© date of tha borough picnic. The report was. adopted. It wae decided that the town clerk should be empowered to get the CaunoU office and Fire Station connected by telephone direct with the City. . The report of the engineer upon the propaced purcbaee of. a motor for the Firo ■r r V trade was received, and it was decided that 'the engines, which had been tested on tho hills of the borough, should be purchased/ On tho motion of Q\ Black it wan decided to grant a holiday to the Council employees on February l€th. . CrTßoswoll moved that the Council discuss' the advisability of joining up with Greater Christchurch. He eta ted that he thought, by throwing in their lot with the City, the ratepayers* would get better \ .»u» for their money; the greater portion 01 the rates could be spent 011 drainage and ordinary repairs; duplication of expenses would be saved; and 'the- position y*th regard to the electric lighting would be more TavouraWe to tho consumers.
