Now that the development of electric power at Niagara Falls is approaching {he point' where it cannot bp much further extended without marring tho splendour of the cataract, it is proposed to find additional power by creating artificial falls four miles down the river. The project is put forward by Dr. T. Keiinard Thompson, of New York, who. is a graduate of the School 6f Practical Science at Toronto, and an engineer of Continental if not international repu,. tation. His scheme is to placo a dapi acroß3 the river ,at Fosters Mats, helow the Whirlpool Rapids. This is the narrowest part of the river. The dam will be 700 ft wide, and over 100 ft high. It will develop 2,000,000 horse-power, saleable at very low prices. The undertaking may cost 200,000,000 dollars, but it will be self-supporting, and it will provide all the electrical energy that the adjacent portions of Canada and the United States will require for decades to come.
