N.Z. GLUE COMPANY'S GARDENS.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY'S VISIT. A very enjoyable afternoon was spent at tho New Zealand Glue Company's worka, Wools'on, on Saturday, when members of tlie Canterbury and Woolston Horticultural Societies made an inspection of tho gardens attached to tho works. Friends of employees of 'he works were also among tho gathering Tlie visitors were greeted by Mr and Mrs M. Davis, and were subsequently entertained at afternoon tea. Mr A. R. Ragg (Canterbury Horticultural Society) and Mi" McGregor Wright (Woolston Horticultural Society), e ns well as other visitois, expressed themselves u.-» d 2 ligh.ed witli the place of beauty that had been evolved from whit a little timo back was nothing but a rubbish heap. It was clear from tho first glance that uo ordinary crattsmar. had been at work in (designing and cairyiag out the scheme of tie gardens. The fact that they are not on tho some level, but arc-terraced, adds variety to the scene. Especially admired was the design oi the big beds immediately in front of the works. A central bed and four ■ surrounding ones showed a patriotic colour scheme, excellently v/orkxl out in red geraniums, white allyssum, and blue lobelia, which made pleasing £nd decided notes of colour agaiust the trim green lawns. Another part cf tho garden displayed masses of crimson verbena, white marguerite daisies, and biuc- violas. In tho rose garden, which was planted only last year, there were eomo blooms remarkable alike 'or fei&e and colour, while another part of the grounds wae devoted to carnations. An exquisitely kept tennis court, and & green which next summer will b® used for bowling, also entered into the scheme of the gardens. . Mr Davis wes warmly complimented upon the enterprise shown by th<i company in. making the surroundings of the works so attractive, and the head gardener, who designed the gardens, was also congratulated upoa the artistry evidenced.
