RECHABITES' .SOCIAL. On Thursday evening the members of the St, Albans Tent, accompanied by representatives irom Linwood, Aclclington, and Riccartoti. paid a fraternal visit to the Sydenham brunch. Two candidates were' initiated, and iwo propositions for membership received. The programme consisted of a quoit match, a cornet solo by Bro. Ball, and a, vocal selection by Sister Ranger. Tho sentiment of the evening, "Success to tho P-hilipson Tent, was proposed by Bro. A. D. Hassall, who referred, to the- efforts of the secretary, Bro. A. Martin, to promote tho success of tho branch. SUMNER SCHOOL COMMITTEE. Tho regular meeting of the Sumner School Committee was' held on Tuesday evening. Present—Mr D. Lumsden (chairman), jind Mesdaraes W. G. Roberts, Fountain Barber, and Messrs G. A. Alexander, C. Benjamin, J. Browne, and the Rev. E. C. W. Powell. It was decided to alter the date of the, school picnic from February 9th to February 16th. The secretary reported that cars would leave Sumner at B.lu, and the train would leave Motukaiara at 5.15 on the return journey. The action of tho sub-committeo in putting work in hand connected with fresh air improvements in the old school was confirmed. Correspondence connected with the proposed visit of tho Minister of Education at the end of the month was received from Mr J. McCombs, M.P., tho member for the district, Satisfactory arrangements were made with regard to the caretaking of the school. SYDEMIAM SCHOOL COMMITEE. The monthly meeting of the Sydenham School Committee was held on Wednesday evening. Present—Messrs E. L. McKeon (chairman), C. H. B, Poore, H. H. McCaw, R. J. Duncan, T. H. Butterfield, W. H. Luxton, and A. C. Fricker. The headmaster Teported that the school had reopened on February Ist, with an attendance of 433 boys and 836 girls. Me.ssrß Fricker and Butterfield were appointed a committee to consult with the headmaster with reference to the advisability or otherwise of holding a school picnic this year. Eleven applications were received fpr the position of assistant mistress to fill Miss' Lloyd's place, and it was recommended that Miss Bertha Rob3on should bo appointed. • It wa3 decided to asphalt a further atrip of the playground. The chairman and Mr Poore spoke favourably as to the repair and cleanliness of the school and grounds. Messrs Taylor, Butterfield, and Duncan were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. . '■ "W.E.A. There was a large attendance at the midday meeting held yesterday at Addington Workshops, when Professor Condliffe and Mr iA H. Tooker, of Victoria College, gave addresses on the aims end objects of tho Workers' Educational Association. Both speakers emphasised the ract that the W.E.A. did not exist to cater for any particular social or economic theory, but that the work of the Association was entirely in the direction of giving the great masses of the people, who fcund the University a closed door to them, an opportunity of acquiring the benefits of sriind knowledge and expert guidance in their studies. Professor Condliffe said that to him. fhv great tragedy ef life was the fact that seventy-five per cent, of the community finished iheir education ait 13 or 14 years, at a period which was a very crucial one for miud and body. The W.E.A. sought to provide a knowledge- of the sciences aud the fact? of life to the adult, so that, by understanding some of ihe great questions that perplexed the world to-day, they could apply their accumulated witdom to their ultimate solution. Both speakere were leaitily applauded, and a unanimous vote of thanks was accorded' them.
