Mass meetings of seamen are being convened to consider tho demand by the owners respecting the continuity of work. Mr Walsh has been elected president, arid Mr Raeburn secretary, by substantial majorities. Both are regarded as militants. Mr Walsh is communicating with tho owners. It is 6tated that the owners hope to be able to reply to the demands within a fortnight. ' PEACE TRIBUNAL DESIRED. (Received February 4th, 10 p.m.) ' MELBOURNE. February 4. The president of the Seamen's Union has announced that he would agree to tho seamen being represented on a peace tribunal if one is appointed after tho owners have agreed to allow the i ships to be manned on conditions existing prior to the stewards' strike. With this authority a deputation will wait on Mr Hughes and ask him to appoint a peace tribunal for the maritime industry. WATERSIDITwOEEERS. MELBOURNE, Feb. 4. Tho shipowners have acceded to the request by the Waterside Workers' Federation for a further conference respecting the new log. The owners had previously offered 25s per day. The men rejected this, but they are now reconsidering it. VIOLENT FISHERMEN. (Received February 4th, 8.5 p.m.) LONDON, February 3. The Grimsby fishermen's strike has assumed a more serious turn. Many trawlers were set adrift during the night, and others were boarded and the compasses smashed.
