BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL.
ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING. The .annual 'distribution of prizes in connexion with tho Christchuxch Boys' High ScWbol took place in the Canter- , buiy College Hall last night. Mr H. D. Acland, chairman of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College, presided over a very large attendance and ' with, him oh the platform were th© Mayor (Dr. Thacker), the headmaster (Mr G. E. Bevan-Brown), tlio headmaster elect (Mr G. J. Lancaster), members of the.staff of the school, members of" the Board of Governors, Mr G. H. »■■■■ Mason, ex-Registrar, Mr L. A. Stringer, Registrar, Mr A. K. Anderson, headmaster of St. Andrew's College, a number of former masters of the school, including Messrs. W. Walton, O. T. J. AlperS; and It. Speight, members of the Canterbury College Professorial Board, and a largo numbey of leading Old Boys. • Apologies ■ for absence were received from Sir L. M. Isitt, M.P., old boys in /Hamilton, headed by Mr F. A. Do la Mare, Prof. Farr, Mr M. C. Keane ' (editor of "The Press"),, and Messrs F.. Steel, and IV. O. R. Gilling, of Canter- .. bury College. The chairman in his opening remarks said that the gathering was one of the most historic that had been held in the hall, as it marked the farewell to the beloved headmaster, Mr C. E. BevanvJJrbwn, and tbelivelcome of his sncqessor, Mr G. J. Lancaster. During the year, tho-Board had been successful in having the plans for the new school approved,
and in securing a substantial grant from the Government. Mr Acland went on: to congratulate the school oh the fino performance put up by its first football fifteen in the past season, the team having proved itself perhaps the finest secondary school team ever seen in New Zealand. The school was, also to be congratulated on having secured as its new headmaster, an old boy, Mr Lancaster, who had been shaped and trained in the traditions of the school. The Board had, as all outside tributes showed, made a most popular and wise selection. The time had come, Mr Acland considered, for New Zealand to choose its educationists from its own people. Mr Bevan-Brown had proved himself one of the sort that moulded an Empire. He had during more than 35 years, buried himself in a work which would live in the history of Christchmeh. "Balbus'' had not quite "finished his wall," for that was a work that would never he finished, but he was handing on the trowel to a worthy apprentice of a great master. Mr Acland went on to pay a tribute to Mrs BevanBrown, in whom Mr Bevan-Brown had bad a loyal and efficient partner. The Board of Governors and all others hoped that Sir Bevan-Brown would be long spared in health and happiness to do more useful work for Christchurcli. (Applause.) Mr 'Bevan-Brown, who was loudly applauded ou rising to deiiVei" his last official annual report, said he could never forget the kindness of the Board of Governors and of his staff during the illness that 'prevented his attendanco during the greater part of the first term, during which time the school had been capably carried on by Mr It. M. Laing. A year ago tho roll number of the school was 383, and had since risen to about 430. Mr Bevan-Brown detailed changes and additions to the staff that had taken place diiring the year, and referred in sympathetic terms to the long and lamentable illness of a very able master, Mr R. .T. Thompson. One of the masters, Mr S. P. McCallum, must be congratulated for ihis success in winning a [Rhodes Scholarship, and the school would be a great loser when Mr McCallum left the staff about tlio end of nest term. In Mr T. TV. Cane, who was going to do lull-time work at Canterbury College after this year, the, school would lose a very able and capable master and a dear friend of the' speaker. Mr H. X>. Broadhead, another master, was going to join the Canterbury College staff, and in his ocparturp, too, the school would suffer a. screre loss. Mr Bevan-Brown went on to enumerate scholastic honours, ■won by old boys during the year, and to the great success of tho school in athletics. Such successes were a great pleasure to hint in his last year, and still more so was the good spirit that existed in tlio school. Never Oiad the school had such a fine set of senior boys, and Mr BevanBrown desired in particular to thank publicly the monitors and tho excellent senior monitor, J. C. Forsyth. The speaker also expressed his thanks to the masters for the interest and trouble they 'had taken with the boys in their sports, and to Captain AV. Hoar and Mr Montgomery for their invaluable work in connexion with the cadets. The recent Education Act, Mr Bevan-Brown went on, had brought, about some sweeping changes in regard to secondary schools, and lie was particularly_ glad to' see that tho status and salaries of assistant masters had been raised, and that young men entering secondaryschool teaching would be assured of at least a modest career. He made an appeal to parents to leave their children at school as lonj as possible, and to confer with the masters in regard to their bojs. Speaking of ihis own resignation, Mr Bevan-Brown said that it was a great comfort to him to bo able to hand over his office to such capable hands as those of Mr Lancaster, a most distinguished old boy. Personally, it was with great reluctance that ho gave up his life's work, but the strain of years had begun to tell, and he felt that new energy was
needed for the ever-oxpanding school. It was a great "wrench to hrealc away from the old school, but in the last lap of his race he had been simply overwhelmed with kindness from the masters, the parents, the old hoys, and the present boys. Mr Bevan-Brown recalled many masters with whom he had been associated .over long periods ot : years, and said'there were still on the school staff some' survivors of "The Old Oontemptibles," members of the original army who had borne tlio brunt of the earlier offensive. However, the "new army,'' the present year's staff, , had •been .a fine one, and he knew tthat he was leaving the school in the hands of a fine body of masters. • Mr Acland then handed to tho successful scholars the prizes won during the past year.
