4 1 FINAL MEETING. The final meeting of the Save the Children Appeal Fund Committee was held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms yesterday, Mr W. H. Rose presiding. A statement presented showed that £9000 had been cabled to London, leaving a balance of £863 (3s lid. Tho principal subscriptions were as follows: Red Cross Society £300, schools £814, churches £2904 os 6d. Ladies' Committee £1026. Tho chairman said that the result of the appeal was satisfactory. The committee had set out to raise £10,000, and so far were only about £150 short. Perhaps when it was realised what a small amount the committee were short of in their objective the sum would be ultimate!}' realised. The efforts of the school children were very gratifying, inasmuch as the little ones had been told that they were not to ask their parents for assistance. Whiio most of tho distiict3 had done their share in connexion with tho fund, Ash burton I had done very little. The attitude of Sir Thomas McKerzie, whose motto,' •'Charity begins at- home." was not a nice one, had no doubt thrown a certain amount of cold water on the appeal. The dhairnian expressed Ins thanks at the manner in which the committee had worked for tho fund, and congratulated the province on tho result. The secretary, Mr Denys Hoare, had done yeoman service, and had been offered an honorarium, which he had declined. The fund was now practically closed, unless some friend-would send along a cheque for £150. He moved that tho report presented should be I adopted and sent to the Government I for audit. _ x In seconding the motion, the Rev. I J. J. Isorth said that the sum collected would be regarded as a token of goodfellowship between the different countries concerned.
