Tlio club have aimed at holding- & proper "old time" regatta, aJid the piotrrammo set forth chows that it has been successful, with; cf course, one not-üblo exception. The old ' fore-and-aft schooner raoe, ouce the Regatta's greatest attraction, is now, unfortunately, of tha past. In lis place, however, the club have arranged an event more, in keeping with the time®. This is tho speed launch, or hydroplane race, and the new generation will see thee© speeddemons, driven by the la-torvt hagh-ppwercd multi-cylindered engines, racing round tiie Inner Harbour at Bpecds of anything up -to 30 xnile3 nn hour. An innovation with regard to the lowing races is the loot that tliev will bo rowed in association clinkers, over ft straight course. The cbviation of the turns fihould provide mora spectacular events' in this section. . The yacht and motor-boat events should result m keenly contested races, and an excc.itent programme of swimming events will be held in the dock. OBITUARY. General regret was expressed' in Lyttelton veeterday, when it was announced that a local postal official, Henry Jphn Sales, had died in the Christchurch Hospital, artar a brief illness. The deceased, who was a Londoner by birth, came to tho port a few yeans ago as a teaman, and then worked ashoro for eomo time. He enlisted with the Fifth Reinforcements, and served on Gallipou, and later in Franco, where he was wounded and. invailided home. On his recovery ho joined tho staff of the local Post Office as. a lettercarrier, and was noted for his obliging disposition, unfailing courtesy, and cheery , demeanour at all tunes. ll*> leaves a widow and two young: children. Deceased will bo accorded a military funeral to-morrow afternoon. MAGISTRATE'S COURT. Messrs C. Ferrier, J.P., and F. G.. Norton J.P., presided at the Magistrate 6 Court yesterday. Henry McCoTmack and Haxpr Roberts, for travelling from Wellington, to Lyttelton without first having paid their fares, wore Temanded until to-day, in order that tho evidence of the purser oi the vessel mjjjht be obtained. . Percy Atkinson, charged with &> serious offence, was temanded without bail until December 24th. ' Two first offenders for drunkenness were each fined ss. RETURNED SOLDIERS' ASSOCIATION. A meeting of (returned soldiers and dependants was held jn the Borough Council Chamber last evening, the Rev. F. Frost presiding over a good attendance. Tho Mayor, Mr "VV. T. Lester, in welcoming the returned men present, referred to tlio fine spirit _of comradeship that had been _ shown during the war and since tho armistice, and stated that ho woul4 do anything ho could to help .tlio returned men. i A motion of sympathy was passed with the widow of the late Mr H. Sales, a Lyttelton soldier, who died in tho Christchurch Hospital on Thursday. ,Mr ¥. E. Leadley, secretary of the Christchurch R.S.A., gave an address on the benefits secured for returned men and theor dependants by the R.S.A., and answered a num,ber of questions. It wa® decided that a canvnps of all tho returned men in the _ Port ehould be conducted on tlie question of establishing a Returned Soldiers' Club in Lyttelton.
