An ex-Anckland resident, now in n China, writing to a brother, says: 'The famine in the provinces of Chin, Shantung and North Honan is terrible. Over large tracts of country the people have tad no Jiarvest for a whole year — people who always live from hand-to-mouth. Even the seed gram him had to be eaten, and now- that splendid rams have come and autumn wheat can be planted they 'have no seed to plant In order %p save the lives of the children, many parents - arcs selling them for a mere pittance—two or three dollars. This opens the way for unscrupulous dealers- to traffic in children. Just think,* it will be eight niontihe at- least, even in Honan, before the wheat that is now being sown can be reaped! The reporta are that 40,000,000 ere involved, but at a moderate estimate some 20,000,000 have no food, and will need relief immediately. Many have alreudy died, and thousands have lhad to leave their homes and emigrate, under the hardest conditions, to adjacent provinces. To give a moderate measure of relief to all the hungry, it is estimated it will take £25,000,000, but a sum like that is hot easily raised in a hurry. All the officials in Shansi are assessing themselves, and our Governor alone has given £4500. Peking is making a great effort, and the whole foreign community in the ports is organising and giving, liberally. Very, extensive relief woTksVare being organised to provide- -work for the men." i ' ======= -Times of all placed horses in this season's events given in "Form at a Glance." Order early. j
