His father, the late -Mr Frederick Brown Hadneld, tet up in business as a chemist, and was known throughout the province. Deceased went to tho Wairau in I860; where lie was in tho service of the late Mr Goultcr for about three years; he then joined in several goid rushes of the middle sixties, among them Black's Point, on ( tho Buller, which was reached then by a Maori canoe via Waiman'garoa. He saw some l<\ely times on the Coast during the riots of that period. lie took up litnd. .it Awarua, on the coast, between Motu- . oka and Takakn, about 18133, where ho . nfterwards settled down as a- small farmer and boatbuilder, where he lived until the last few , months. ile leaves three drmjrhters, Mrs W. Winter (Awarua), Mrs J. A. Adams (Richmond), and Mrs J S. McLaren (Nelson), and five sons. F. G., W. V., and -W. H. i Hadfield. of Awarua; D. C.
