MILITARISM IN HANMER.
TO THE EIUTOK OF "l'lIE I'KKSS>. : ' Sir, — residents of Hanmer are under the uan of uncalled;!or military dict,:t(;rialno:-s. For some time now the authorities of Queen .Wary lioipitai have shown a very marked inclination to enforce exclu.sivene.-s. Last Saturday a cricket and concert party came here from Chris-1 hur;!;i to cut-rtain the boys. Ilie cricket went well, but wi;e:i it came to the concert part, Hanmer people found that tho edict he.d gone forth that I'liey wore to be excluded, and; "Without any rmbLi~ notice. on appearance at the \.M.C.A. Hall, wer£ told the concert was for patients and [ staff only, it we.s- very galling to find all the vi-itors from the Lodge admitted, and residents who happened to pet in were ejected. This is not like the old timo-s, wuen Captain Harding and Captain Clifton were in authority. Now, what 1 would like to point oub : is that the local people "n'ore always workers before the present line of colonels, matrons, and V.A.D.'s appeared, and the b'u's never had better j times. Further, the Defence authorities have taken t/.e only public building here from the re-idents, and left them ! entirely dependent for any entertainment to the hospital. The Diggers are most indignant about the matter, and would like to know why such orders are I issued.—Yours, ote.. PRO I'ONO PUBLICO. Hanmer, December 11th.
