I Mr J H. W T . Uru, M.P., has asked tho chairman of the Tuahiwi Runanga to make all arrangements for a visit by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle on Iriday morning. Mr T. A. Hunter, Chief Dental Officer, is at present in Dunedin Tor the purpose of conferring with local members of Parliament over tho »stato dental scheme. An Auckland telegram states that Mr William Anderson, M.A., of Glasgow, has been appointed to the Chair or Philosophy at tho Auckland University College from eight applicants, and Mr P. W. Burbidge, M.Sc, B.A. (Cantab.), to the Chair of Physics, from five applicants. The Hon. W. Nosworthy, Minister of Agriculture, was a passenger by tho ferry steamer from Wellington on Monday night, and yesterday proceeded by the first express to Invcrcargill, where he will attend the agricultural show. While in the South he will enquire into the, matter of establishing an experimental farm in the South Island, and ho will visit some areas which have been suggested for tho purpose. An announcement that he is sending his resignation to the Auckland Presbytery has been made by tho Rev. Isaao Jolly, minister of St. Stephen's Church, Ponsonby. The reason given by Mr Jolly is that for about three years he has been suffering badly from neuritis. In a statement he said that, having tried nearly everything that could be thought of, his medical advisers said the only thing!left was a long rest and a change At his time of life (for he is 68 years of age) he thought ho would "be making a mistake to take a holiday and then return to tho church, as the Kirk Session had asked him to do. Ho thought it would be a mistake, both for himself and for the congregation, and therefore his resignation was going in to tho Presbytery the next day. Mr Jolly will celebrate his sixty-ninth birthday in February next. He has been 33 years in the ministry, and was for six years prior to that engaged in home mission work in Glasgow. He is a graduate of Glasgow University. Ho has been minister of St. Stephen's Cthirch. for eleven xcars, has been Moderator of the Auckland Presbytery, and also Moderntor of the New Zealand General Assembly. At a gathering of over one hundred members of the Christchureh Y.M.C.A. on Monday evening, the retiring president, Mr T. C Field, was presented with an illuminated address of artistic design. Tho text of the address was as follows: "On the completion of your second term as president of the Christchurch Young Men' 6 Christian Association, which*>ffk?e you have so ably filled for periods totalling five years, we desire, on behalf of the full membership, to express the highest appreciation of the service you have cheerfully rendered, and the support you have generously given as a member of the board of directors during the past thirteen years. In assuring you of the warm regard in which you are held by the general membership, we unite in expressing tho hope that you will long be spared to continue your good works." The health of the retiring president was toast?d with musical honours and hearty cheers. In acknowledging the presentation. Mr Field announced that, at the unanimous request of the board of directors, Mr Andrew Borrows had consented to nomination for the office of president for the ensuing year, which intimation was cordially received.
