In accordance with the Government's policy of reducing, tho personnel of tlio Defence Department to a minimum, con- ( sistent with maintaining the maximum }t amount of efficiency possible, an announcement was made recently that a number of officers in tho Now Zealand Staff Corps and tho Royal New Zealand Aitiilery would bo retired. Tlio intention of* tho authorities, it is understood, is to reduce the strength of tho Staff Corps and tho commissioned ranks of'tliQ permanent force by about 26 per cent., and there has been much speculation among officers as to whose fate it would be to be given notice. • Tlio names of thoso who aro to go out havo now been decided upon, and it is expected that within a few days the officers affected will havo revived intimation that their services will bo no longer required. Thero 01*0 at present about 144 omcers in tho Staff Corjis, and the R.N.Z.A., and all but six havo seen active servico either in tho South African war or the lato war, and some m both wars.
