Checkley have returned to Christclvurch, niter a extensive motor tour of the fcoutn Island. Tho Hon. Mark Cohen, M.L.C., who has retired from the editorship or t l Dunedin "Evening Star,'' atter 00} vears in tho e'mpioy of the company, was farewelled yesterday by the directors and tho employees of all departments, and presented with a 6° ''star" medal, a. writing wallet, a. go.a fountain pen, and an album with tm. signatures of all the employees. Mr J. Annand, late bandmaster of tho Bth (South Canterbury) Regimenta Band, and who has been transform to take charge of the seeds department of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-opera-tive Association at Rangiora, was entertained at a farewell social at Ashburton on Thursday night, and on behalt ot the present members of the Band, past members, and others, with a roll-top desk. • Mr L. W. Stewart, who has been appointed an assistant-master in the preparatory department of St. Andrew s 'College,* is a returned soldier, wlio reached tho rank of lieutenant in tho Roval Air Force in England. An old boy of West Christchurcli D.H.b., lio has sinco had experience as a t-eachcr at AYalt-ham school, and at the Cliristchurch Teachers* Training College. Ho represented his school in Rugby football. Mr J. H. "Williamson, B.Sc., A.0.5.M., at present on the stall at Ashburton High School, has been appointed by tho Board of Governors mathematics and science master ana senior housemaster at St. Andrew s College. After a very successful carcer at Ota.so High School, ho gained a university entrance scholarship in J9IS.. At Otago University he completed his B.Sc. degree in 191 £>, gaining high places in mathematics and chemistry. His studies were interrupted by a period of servico as acting-director or the Reefton School of Mines, and from 1917 till IPI9 ho was in the N.Z.k.l?. in France. After tho armistice he was a. le'.'turcr on mathematics to tho r«cw Zealand Division in Germany and England ; and, returning to the Dominion, com rioted his studies for tlio'B.Sc. and A.O.S M. diploma. A player of football, hockey, and tennis, lio is also proficient in military drill, being a. warrant officer in the X.Z.E.F. At a meeting of tho Ashburton School Committee held last night, tho chairman reported that thirteen applications had been received for tho position of headmaster of tho school, and of theso tho Board of Education had forwarded tho names of three for tho committee to choose from. The qualifications for each of tho three being equal a" ballot was taken, with tno result that the commjtteo decided to recommend tho appointment of Mr S. J, Irwin, of Burnett street, Ashburton, organising teacher for the country schools of the Ashburton district. Mr Irwin was a pupil teacher at tho East Christehurch. school for four years, subsequently ft student at the Normal school, Christchurcli, then first assistant at the Sydenham school, headmaster of tho Dovleston school: later on as-sistant-master at the Normal school, then mast-ex at the model school, and is now organising teacher in the Ashburton County. He was appointed at tho beginning of this year hv tlw Board •of Education to pureed to the Chatham Islands to inspect the school there.
