BOOKMAKERS' TELEPHONES.
+ . ORDER POB REINSTATEMENT. A dozen or so telephones in th© Christchurch Central Bureau district were suddenly cut off on Wednesday, in accordance with the directions of the Postal and Teiegraph Department's headquarters in Wellington, as it was believed that they wero used by bookmakers for the purpose of making betting transactions. In yesterday morning's issue of "The Press" a special message from Wellington intimated that the order had been given by a subordinate official, without authority, his action having resulted in tho disarrangement of the Government's gen-, eral campaign, and the PostmasterGeneral had thereupon ordered the reinstatement or the telephones. Acting on that order, thp local officials yesterday reinstated all the telephones which had been cut off. They received tho bare instruction to do so, without any explanations, and, it may be remarked, tho instruction to cut off the connexions was not accompanied by any reason for tno direction.
